The Core Difference: Cloud vs. Desktop
The biggest philosophical difference between the two systems is where the work happens.
Microsoft 365 (Desktop First): While Microsoft has web versions of its apps, the system is fundamentally designed around heavy, powerful desktop applications (like the actual Excel program installed on your hard drive). It is designed for complex formatting, massive data processing, and offline work.
Google Workspace (Cloud First): Google does not have desktop apps. Everything happens inside your web browser (like Google Chrome). It is designed for speed, simplicity, and real-time collaboration. Five people can edit a Google Doc simultaneously without the document ever crashing or creating conflicting copies.

Working Across the Aisle
What happens if you use Google Workspace, but a client sends you a Microsoft Word document?
You don't need to buy Microsoft Word.
- Drag the
.docx(Word) or.xlsx(Excel) file into your Google Drive. - Double-click it.
- Google Docs/Sheets will open the Microsoft file natively, allowing you to edit it without destroying the original Microsoft formatting.
