Summary
This article guides you through fixing a common issue where Microsoft Outlook freezes or gets stuck on the blue splash screen indefinitely while displaying "Loading Profile" or "Processing".
Symptoms
- You open Outlook, but it never gets past the blue rectangular loading screen.
- The loading text says "Loading Profile", "Processing", or "Starting".
- The main Outlook email window never appears.
Before You Start
- None required.
Instructions
1. Force Quit the Hidden Outlook Process
Outlook often leaves a background process running, and that blocks the next start.
- Even if the splash screen is closed, a background process might be stuck.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
- In the Processes tab, scroll down and look for Microsoft Outlook.
- Right-click Microsoft Outlook and select End task.
- Wait a few seconds, then try opening Outlook again. If it stops on the blue splash screen again, a stuck background process was not the cause. Continue to Step 2.
2. Start Outlook in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads Outlook without add-ins, which tells you whether an add-in is the cause.
- Ensure Outlook is completely closed.
- Press the
Windows Key + Rto open the Run dialog box. - Type exactly:
outlook.exe /safe(make sure there is a space before the slash). - Press Enter.
- When prompted to choose a profile, click OK.
- If Outlook successfully opens in Safe Mode, the issue is likely a corrupted Add-in.
- Go to File > Options > Add-ins, click Go... next to "COM Add-ins", and uncheck all add-ins. Click OK, close Outlook, and reopen it normally. If Outlook hangs on the splash screen in Safe Mode too, add-ins are not the cause. Continue to Step 3.
3. Run the Navigation Pane Reset Command
A damaged navigation pane hangs the profile load, and this command rebuilds it.
- If Safe Mode didn't fix the problem, a corrupted navigation pane might be the cause.
- Press the
Windows Key + Rto open the Run dialog box. - Type exactly:
outlook.exe /resetnavpane(make sure there is a space before the slash). - Press Enter. Outlook will attempt to reset your folder layout and open normally.
If Outlook still stops on Loading Profile after the reset, the profile itself is damaged and rebuilding it needs admin tools. Raise a ticket saying that Safe Mode and outlook.exe /resetnavpane both leave Outlook stuck on the splash screen, how long you waited each time, and the exact wording of any error that appeared.
4. Verify Success
Open Outlook normally and confirm it reaches your inbox without hanging.
- Close Outlook completely, wait five seconds, and open it from your Start menu or taskbar. It will load past the blue splash screen within a few seconds.
