Instructions ​

1. Enable Editing (Protected View) ​

  1. If the yellow bar says PROTECTED VIEW, it means the file was downloaded from the internet or received via email. Office opens it in a restricted mode to prevent viruses from infecting your computer.
  2. If you trust the sender and expected the file, click the Enable Editing button on the right side of the yellow bar.
  3. The file will now become editable.

2. Enable Content (Macros) ​

  1. If the yellow bar says SECURITY WARNING Macros have been disabled, the file contains automated code (macros).
  2. Malicious macros are a very common way hackers distribute ransomware. You should only enable macros if you explicitly trust the source (e.g., an internal company report).
  3. If you trust the file, click the Enable Content button on the right side of the yellow bar. The macros will now run.

  1. Sometimes, clicking "Enable Content" doesn't work, or the warning keeps coming back.
  2. Close the Office application completely.
  3. Locate the downloaded file in your Downloads folder (or wherever you saved it).
  4. Right-click the file and select Properties.
