Summary

If your camera does not turn on in a Teams meeting, shows a black screen, or Teams says no camera is detected, the issue is almost always a privacy setting, a device selection mismatch, or another app holding the camera. This article walks you through every user-level camera fix, ordered from fastest to most thorough.

• You have no video — others cannot see you, even though you can see and hear them.
• Teams says no camera found, or the camera icon is greyed out.

Before You Start

• A webcam connected to your computer (built-in, USB, or integrated into an external monitor).
• Microsoft Teams desktop app installed and signed in. If you join meetings from the browser at https://teams.microsoft.com instead, the camera permission lives with the browser, not Windows — follow How to Manage Site Camera and Microphone Permissions.
• If using an external USB webcam, plug it in before opening Teams.

Instructions

1. Check the Camera Button and In-Meeting Video Controls (15 Seconds)

The most common cause of "others can't see me" is the camera being turned off in the meeting.

1. Look at the meeting toolbar at the top (or bottom) of the Teams meeting window.
2. Check the camera icon:
   • If it has a line through it — your camera is off. Click it to turn video on (or press Ctrl + Shift + O).
   • If it shows your face — your camera is working.
3. If the camera icon is greyed out or unresponsive, the camera is either not detected or blocked by a privacy setting. Continue to Method 2.
4. Before joining a meeting, use the pre-join screen to verify your camera. The preview should show a live feed of your face. If it shows a black screen, troubleshoot before joining.

Verification: The camera icon is active (no line through it) and other participants can see your video feed.

2. Select the Correct Camera in Teams Settings

Teams may be pointing at the wrong camera — especially if you have both a built-in laptop camera and an external USB webcam.

1. Open Microsoft Teams.
2. Click Settings and more (...) next to your profile picture in the top-right corner, then select Settings.
3. Click Devices in the left sidebar.
4. Under Camera, click the dropdown and select your preferred webcam.
5. A live preview should appear below the dropdown showing your face. If the preview is black, the selected device is not working — try selecting a different camera from the dropdown.
6. If you only see one camera listed and the preview is black, the camera is either blocked or has a driver issue. Continue to Method 3.
7. During a live meeting, you can also switch cameras by clicking the three dots (…) > Audio and video settings and changing the camera dropdown there.

Verification: The camera preview in Teams Settings shows a clear live feed of your face.

3. Check the Physical Camera Privacy Shutter or Cover

Many modern laptops and external webcams have a physical privacy shutter or slide that blocks the lens.

1. Look at your webcam lens. Check for:
   • A sliding cover over the lens (common on ThinkPads, Dell Latitude, and HP EliteBooks). Slide it to the open position.
   • A removable lens cap (common on external Logitech webcams). Remove it.
   • A physical switch on the side of an external monitor with an integrated camera. Toggle it to On.
2. If you use a privacy sticker or tape over the camera, remove it.
3. After uncovering the lens, go back to Teams Settings > Devices and check the camera preview.

Verification: The camera LED turns on and the Teams preview shows a live image.

4. Allow Camera Access in Windows Privacy Settings

Windows can block specific apps from accessing the camera entirely. If this setting is disabled, Teams will not detect the camera even though the hardware is working.

1. Open Settings (press Windows + I).
2. Click Privacy & security in the left sidebar.
3. Under App permissions, click Camera.
4. Ensure Camera access is toggled On at the top.
5. Scroll down to Let desktop apps access your camera and ensure it is toggled On.
6. If Microsoft Teams is listed individually, ensure it is toggled On.
7. Restart Teams after changing any privacy setting.

Verification: Camera access is enabled for desktop apps. The Teams camera preview works after restarting the app.

5. Close Other Apps Using the Camera

Only one app can use the camera at a time. If another app (Zoom, Webex, the Windows Camera app, a browser with camera access) is holding the camera, Teams will show a black screen.

1. Close any other video or camera application that might be running:
   • Zoom, Webex, Google Meet (in a browser tab), or Slack huddles.
   • The built-in Windows Camera app.
   • Any browser tab with active camera permission (video recording sites, virtual backgrounds tools, etc.).
2. To check which apps are running, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
3. Look for video conferencing apps in the Processes list. Right-click and select End task on any that should not be running.
4. After closing the conflicting app, return to Teams Settings > Devices and check the camera preview.

Verification: After closing other camera apps, the Teams camera preview shows a live feed.

6. Disable GPU Hardware Acceleration in Teams

Hardware acceleration offloads video processing to your GPU, but on some systems it causes camera rendering issues — especially with older integrated graphics.

1. Open Microsoft Teams.
2. Click Settings and more (...) > Settings.
3. Click General in the left sidebar.
4. Under Performance and compatibility (or Application), check Disable GPU hardware acceleration.
5. Restart Teams (close and reopen the app).
6. Check the camera preview in Settings > Devices after restarting.

Verification: After disabling hardware acceleration and restarting, the camera preview works. Note: Disabling GPU acceleration may slightly increase CPU usage during video calls.

7. Update or Reinstall the Camera Driver

If the camera is not detected by Windows at all, or produces a black image in every app (not only Teams), the camera driver may be corrupted or outdated.

1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
2. Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices).
3. Verify your camera is listed here (e.g., Integrated Camera, Logitech Webcam C920, HP Wide Vision HD Camera).
4. If the camera has a yellow warning icon, the driver has an issue. Right-click it and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
5. If no update is found, or the camera still does not work, reinstall the driver:
   • Right-click the camera in Device Manager and select Uninstall device.
   • When prompted, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device if available.
   • Click Uninstall.
   • Click the Action menu at the top of Device Manager and select Scan for hardware changes. Windows will detect the camera and reinstall the driver automatically.
6. Restart your computer after the driver reinstalls.
7. If the camera does not appear in Device Manager at all (even after scanning for hardware changes), the hardware itself may be disabled in BIOS/UEFI or physically faulty. Ask IT to check whether the camera is switched off in the computer's BIOS/UEFI settings, and tell them it does not appear under Cameras in Device Manager even after scanning for hardware changes.

Verification: The camera reappears in Device Manager without a warning icon. The Windows Camera app shows a live feed, and Teams also detects the camera.

8. Clear the Teams Cache

A corrupted Teams cache can cause device settings to become stuck, preventing the camera from being recognized.

1. Close Microsoft Teams completely:
   • Click the X to close the window.
   • Right-click the Teams icon in the system tray (click the ^ arrow if hidden) and select Quit.
2. Press Windows + R, type %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams and press Enter.
   • For New Teams, the path is %localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams.
3. Delete all files and folders inside this directory.
4. Reopen Microsoft Teams. It will rebuild the cache and you will need to sign in again.
5. Go to Settings > Devices and re-select your camera.

Verification: Teams opens fresh, the camera appears in the device dropdown, and the preview shows a live feed.

9. Test the Camera Outside of Teams

If none of the above steps work, determine whether the issue is Teams-specific or system-wide.

1. Open the Windows Camera app (search for "Camera" in the Start menu).
2. If the Camera app shows a live preview — the camera hardware and driver are working. The issue is Teams-specific. Try reinstalling Teams:
   • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
   • Find Microsoft Teams, click the three dots (…), and select Uninstall.
   • Download and install Teams again from https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads.
3. If the Camera app also shows a black screen or says "We can't find your camera", the issue is system-wide — the driver, privacy setting, or hardware is the problem. 4. If the camera works in the Camera app and in a browser (try https://webcamtests.com) but not in Teams, the issue is isolated to Teams. A cache clear (Method 8) and reinstall are the definitive fixes.

Verification: This method identifies whether the root cause is in Teams or in Windows/hardware, directing you to the right next step.

Troubleshooting

Before joining an important meeting, always check your camera preview on the pre-join screen. If the preview shows a black screen, troubleshoot before entering the meeting — it is much easier to fix camera issues when you are not on a live call.
