Summary

This article guides you through troubleshooting steps to resolve issues where Adobe Acrobat or Reader freezes or becomes unresponsive.

Before You Start

  • Ensure you are connected to the internet.
  • Close any open PDFs and the Adobe application before starting repairs.
  • Save your work in other applications.

Instructions

1. Update Adobe Acrobat

Software updates often contain fixes for stability issues.

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
  2. Go to Help > Check for Updates.
  3. If an update is available, click Download and Install.
  4. Restart the computer after the update is complete.

If Acrobat reports it is already up to date, or it hangs again on the first PDF you open after the update, the version is not the cause. Continue to Step 2.

2. Disable Protected Mode at Startup

Protected Mode can sometimes conflict with system configurations.

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Go to Menu (or Edit) > Preferences.
  3. Select Security (Enhanced) from the Categories list on the left.
  4. Uncheck the box for Enable Protected Mode at startup.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the security warning.
  6. Click OK to save changes.
  7. Restart the application.

If Acrobat still stops responding with Protected Mode switched off, turn it back on in the same Security (Enhanced) panel before moving on — leaving it off costs you a real security layer for no gain. Continue to Step 3.

3. Repair Installation

If files are corrupted, a repair installation can fix them.

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Go to Help > Repair Installation.
  3. Click Yes to confirm.
  4. Allow the repair process to finish (this may take a few minutes).
  5. Restart your computer.

If Acrobat freezes again after the repair finishes, the local fixes are exhausted and it needs a clean reinstall, which requires admin rights. Raise a ticket with the version number from Help > About Adobe Acrobat, whether every PDF freezes or only one specific file, and what you were doing when it locked up — opening, printing, or filling in a form.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Adobe Acrobat freeze when I open large PDFs?
Large PDFs with complex images or forms can overwhelm older versions of Acrobat. Updating the software usually resolves memory management issues.
Will repairing Adobe delete my saved PDFs?
No. The Repair function only fixes missing or corrupted program files. It does not delete or alter any PDF documents saved on your computer.
