Summary

A pointer that vanishes is almost never a broken mouse. It is usually invisible rather than absent — drawn off-screen, hidden by a setting, or dropped by a stalled display driver. This article gets you moving again with the keyboard, then works through each cause so it stops happening.

• The pointer is gone from the screen but clicking still selects things, so the mouse is working.
• The pointer disappears the moment you start typing and does not return.
• The pointer vanishes only inside one app — a browser, a remote desktop session, or a video player.
• The pointer reappears for a second when you move the mouse fast, then disappears again.
• The pointer is missing on a laptop and the trackpad does nothing at all.
• The pointer disappears when you drag toward one edge of the screen and never comes back.
• The pointer is only invisible over white documents or dark video, and visible everywhere else.

• Keyboard access — every step here can be completed without a working pointer.
• No admin rights are required.

Instructions

1. Find the Pointer Before You Change Anything

Three tests, twenty seconds, and you know which of the following steps applies to you.

1. Tap the Ctrl key once. If a shrinking circle flashes somewhere on screen, the pointer is alive and you have found it. If nothing happens, the locator setting is off — turn it on in Step 2, then come back.
2. Move the mouse in a wide circle for three seconds. Windows briefly enlarges the pointer during fast movement. A flicker of the arrow means the pointer is being drawn and something is hiding it, not that it is gone.
3. Press Windows + P. The Project flyout opens on the right edge of the screen. Press the Down arrow to highlight PC screen only and press Enter. If the pointer reappears immediately, it was sitting on a second monitor that is switched off or disconnected — go to the note at the end of this step.

Verification: If clicking still works — you can hit Enter on a highlighted button, or the taskbar highlights as you sweep the mouse along the bottom edge — the mouse hardware is fine. This is a display problem, and Steps 4 and 7 are where you will find it.

Note on multi-monitor setups: Windows keeps a disconnected or powered-off display in the desktop layout until you tell it otherwise. The pointer moves onto that screen and disappears from view entirely. Windows + P > PC screen only retrieves it. 2. Turn On the Ctrl Key Locator

This is off by default. Turning it on takes thirty seconds and converts every future disappearance into a one-keypress problem.

1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
2. Click Bluetooth & devices in the left sidebar, then Mouse.
3. Scroll to the bottom and click Additional mouse settings under Related settings. The Mouse Properties dialog opens in a separate window.
4. Click the Pointer Options tab along the top of the dialog.
5. In the Visibility section at the bottom, select the checkbox Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.
6. Click Apply, then OK.

Verification: Tap Ctrl. A dark circle contracts onto the pointer's position and vanishes. This works from anywhere in Windows, including over full-screen apps.

Tip: If you cannot navigate to Additional mouse settings without a pointer, press Windows + R, type main.cpl, and press Enter. That opens Mouse Properties directly. Move between tabs with Ctrl + Tab and toggle checkboxes with the Spacebar.

3. Check the Trackpad Disable Key on a Laptop

Laptop keyboards carry a trackpad toggle on the function row, and the palm of your hand finds it regularly. There is no standard key — it varies by manufacturer and by model within a manufacturer.

1. Look along the F1 to F12 row for a key printed with a small rectangle, usually with a line or an X through it. Common positions:
   • Fn + F3 — many HP models.
   • Fn + F5 — common on Dell and Lenovo.
   • Fn + F6 or Fn + F9 — some Lenovo, Acer, and ASUS models.
2. Press Fn together with that key once, then test the trackpad.
3. Check for a hardware indicator. Some HP laptops have a small light or a double-tap zone in the top-left corner of the trackpad itself — a lit dot means the trackpad is off. Double-tap that corner to re-enable it.
4. Confirm the setting in Windows. Press Windows + I, click Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad, and confirm the Touchpad toggle at the top is On.
5. While you are there, expand Touchpad and select Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected if you want the trackpad to keep working with an external mouse plugged in.

Note: If the trackpad is on and the pointer still does not move at all — no locator circle, no response to clicks — the problem is the pointing device rather than the display. 4. Restart the Graphics Driver

When the display driver stalls, Windows keeps running but stops drawing the pointer layer. There is a keyboard shortcut that restarts the driver on the spot without closing a single application.

1. Save any work in progress out of habit. Nothing closes during this, and open documents are untouched.
2. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.
3. Watch the screen. It goes black for roughly one second and a short beep sounds on most machines. Then everything redraws.
4. Move the mouse. The pointer reappears.

Verification: The screen blink is the confirmation that the shortcut fired. If nothing at all happens on screen, the keypress did not register — press each key firmly and hold all four together.

Note: A driver that needs restarting more than once a week is a driver due for an update, and that is a ticket worth raising. Tell IT: "My display driver stalls repeatedly — the mouse pointer stops rendering and Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B brings it back. Please push the current graphics driver for this model." Include the make and model from Settings > System > About.

5. Turn Off Hide Pointer While Typing

Windows hides the pointer while you type so it does not sit over the words. It is meant to reappear the instant you move the mouse. On some systems it does not.

1. Press Windows + R, type main.cpl, and press Enter to open Mouse Properties.
2. Click the Pointer Options tab.
3. In the Visibility section, clear the checkbox Hide pointer while typing.
4. Click Apply, then OK.

Verification: Open Notepad or Word, type a sentence, and stop. The pointer stays visible over the text throughout.

Tip: In the same Visibility section, clearing Display pointer trails is worth doing too. Trails were designed for old low-refresh laptop screens, and on a modern display they smear the pointer into an indistinct streak that is harder to track, not easier.

6. Fix a Pointer That Only Vanishes in One App

If the pointer is fine on the desktop and disappears inside one specific window, Windows is not the problem — that application is drawing its own pointer and has lost it.

• In a browser: Press Esc to leave full-screen video, or F11 to exit full-screen browsing. Video players hide the pointer after a few idle seconds by design and restore it on movement; if it stays hidden, click once inside the page and move the mouse again. Reloading the tab with Ctrl + R clears it if the page's own script has taken over the pointer.
• In a remote desktop or virtual desktop session: The remote computer draws the pointer, so it can vanish there while your local pointer is fine. Click once inside the session window to give it focus. If that does nothing, minimise the session window and restore it — this forces the remote host to redraw the screen. Disconnecting and reconnecting the session resolves the rest.
• In Teams or another screen-sharing app: The pointer often stops rendering for the viewer rather than the presenter. Ask the presenter to move the mouse continuously for a moment; if it is still invisible to you, stop and rejoin the share.
• In a full-screen app that captures the pointer: Press Alt + Tab to switch away and back, or Windows + D to show the desktop and then return. Either forces the pointer back under Windows' control.

Note: If the pointer disappears in every app but the desktop is fine, that is a display driver symptom rather than an app symptom. Go back to Step 4.

7. Make the Pointer Visible Over Any Background

A white pointer on a white spreadsheet is not missing. It is camouflaged, and no amount of driver restarting will help — the fix is to change what the pointer looks like.

1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
2. Click Accessibility in the left sidebar, then Mouse pointer and touch.
3. Under Mouse pointer style, choose one of the four tiles:
   • Inverted — the pointer flips its colour to contrast with whatever is behind it. This is the single best option for a pointer that vanishes over specific backgrounds, because it adapts rather than committing to one colour.
   • Custom — pick a fixed high-visibility colour. A saturated green or magenta stands out against documents, dark video, and code editors alike.
   • Black or White — solid colours with a contrasting outline, useful if you always work in one theme.
4. Drag the Size slider to the right by one or two notches. A larger pointer is faster to re-acquire even when its colour matches the background.

Verification: Open a blank document and a dark image side by side and sweep the pointer across both. With Inverted selected, the pointer stays legible over each.

Tip: Some applications override the Windows pointer scheme inside their own window — Adobe apps, CAD tools, and remote sessions are the common ones. If the pointer is only invisible in those, use the Ctrl locator from Step 2, which draws over everything. Troubleshooting

TIP

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B first, every time. It restarts the graphics driver in about one second, closes nothing, loses no work, and resolves the majority of disappearing pointers on the spot. Only move on to the other steps if the pointer is still missing after the screen blinks.
