Summary
You can join a Microsoft Teams meeting hosted by an outside company, client, or vendor even if you don't have a Microsoft Teams subscription or a work Microsoft account. This guide shows you how to join seamlessly using your web browser or the Teams app as an external guest.

Before You Start
- An email invitation or calendar event containing a Microsoft Teams meeting link.
- A computer or laptop with a working microphone and speakers.
- An updated web browser (Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Safari).
Instructions
1. Open the Meeting Link from Your Invitation
- Open your email program (such as Outlook or Gmail) or calendar app.
- Locate the meeting invitation from the external sender.
- Click the link that says Join Microsoft Teams Meeting or Click here to join the meeting.
2. Choose Your Web Browser or Desktop App Option
When you click the link, your web browser opens a Microsoft launch page with three options:
- Download the Windows app: Downloads the desktop software (not required).
- Continue on this browser: Lets you join instantly on the web (recommended for quick guest access).
- Open Teams app: Opens your installed desktop app if you already have Teams.
Click Continue on this browser.
TIP
If your web browser shows a pop-up box asking "Open Microsoft Teams?", click Cancel if you want to stay in the web browser, or click Open to switch to the desktop client.
3. Allow Microphone and Camera Access
Before entering the meeting, your browser must ask for hardware permissions.
- Look for a permission prompt near the top-left corner of your browser address bar.
- Click Allow (or Allow on every visit) when prompted for camera and microphone access.
4. Type Your Name and Click Join Now
- In the pre-meeting screen, type your full name and company name into the Enter name box (for example,
Jane Doe (Acme Corp)). - Use the toggles to turn your camera on or off.
- Click Audio off, Computer audio, or select your headset from the dropdown list.
- Click the blue Join now button.
5. Wait in the Virtual Lobby
If the meeting organizer enabled lobby security for external attendees, you will see a message: "Someone in the meeting should let you in soon."
- Remain on the screen — do not close your browser tab.
- The host receives a notification on their screen and will click Admit.
- Once admitted, your audio and video feed will connect automatically.
Note: If there is no lobby and no mic or camera control at all, the invite is for a town hall rather than a meeting — a one-way broadcast where attendee audio and video are disabled by design and questions go through a Q&A panel. See How to Join a Teams Town Hall or Live Event.
Troubleshooting
WARNING
If you are currently signed into a different company's Teams account on your desktop app, signing into an external guest meeting may prompt a tenant-switch error. Joining via an InPrivate/Incognito web browser window bypasses tenant conflicts instantly.
