Summary

Your laptop camera has failed or looks terrible, and the call starts shortly. The phone in your pocket has a far better camera, and on two of the three common pairings there is a built-in way to use it — no downloads, no accounts. This guide covers which pairing you have, how to set each one up, how to select the phone inside Teams, Zoom and Meet, and what to do in the last sixty seconds if none of it works.

Before You Start

• Your phone and computer on the same Wi-Fi network, with Bluetooth on.
• A charging cable within reach. Running the camera drains a phone quickly, and this is the most common way the trick fails halfway through a call.
• Something to prop the phone on at roughly eye level — a stand, a laptop riser, or a stack of books.
• No admin rights are needed for the built-in routes in steps 2 and 3.

Instructions

1. Find out which pairing you have

The three common phone-and-computer combinations have three completely different answers, and picking the wrong path wastes the time you do not have.

1. Identify your two devices, then go straight to the matching step.
2. Android phone with a Windows 11 PC — there is a built-in route through Phone Link. Go to step 2.
3. iPhone with a Mac — there is a built-in route called Continuity Camera. Go to step 3.
4. iPhone with a Windows PC, or an Android phone with a Mac — there is no built-in route from either vendor. Go to step 4, which sets out the honest options.
5. Whichever path you take, come back to step 5 to pick the phone as your camera inside the meeting app. That part is the same for everyone.

2. Set up an Android phone as the camera on a Windows 11 PC

Windows calls this a connected camera, and it makes your phone available to every app on the PC without any extra software.

1. Check you meet Microsoft's requirements before you start: the PC on Windows 11 or later, the phone on Android 10 or later, and the Link to Windows app at version 1.24022.0 or later. On Windows 10 this feature does not exist — go to step 4.
2. Link the phone to the PC first if you have not already. How to Link Your Phone to Windows (Phone Link) walks through the pairing.
3. On the PC, open Settings, select Bluetooth & devices, scroll to Mobile devices, and click Manage devices. If that path has moved on your build, search Settings for mobile devices and it lands on the same screen.
4. Turn on Use as connected camera for your phone. You can turn this straight back off later and the PC returns to its built-in camera; nothing else about the phone or the PC changes.
5. Watch the phone for a permission prompt asking to use the camera, and allow it. If no prompt appears, open the phone's Settings, find Link to Windows in the app list, and turn the camera permission on there.
6. Look at the PC taskbar. A window with a camera icon opens showing the live view from the phone, with controls to pause the feed.
7. Test it before the call: open the Windows Camera app and confirm your phone's view appears rather than the laptop camera. A black placeholder with a white icon means the permission in point 5 has not been granted yet.

3. Set up an iPhone as the camera on a Mac

Apple calls this Continuity Camera, and it needs no app on either device — the Mac offers the iPhone as a camera as soon as both are nearby and signed in.

1. Check the requirements Apple documents: an iPhone XR or later, both devices signed in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on, and the two devices within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other.
2. Confirm the feature is on: on the iPhone, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity, named AirPlay & Handoff on older releases, and check Continuity Camera. It is on by default.
3. Mount the phone near the Mac with the rear camera pointing at you and the screen facing away. Do not open any app on the phone — the Mac starts the camera itself.
4. Pick the iPhone as the camera inside your meeting app, using step 5 below. The iPhone screen switches to a Connected view with Pause and Disconnect buttons.
5. If it will not connect wirelessly, check that the Mac is not currently using AirPlay or Sidecar, then move the devices closer together. Connecting the iPhone with a cable also works, and over USB the iPhone has to be set to trust the Mac.
6. Add the effects if you want them: open Control Center in the Mac menu bar during a call and choose Video Effects for Center Stage, Portrait and Studio Light.

4. Understand the options for an iPhone on a Windows PC

Neither Microsoft nor Apple provides a built-in way to use an iPhone as a webcam on a Windows PC, and the same is true of an Android phone on a Mac.

1. Accept the situation rather than hunting for a hidden setting: the category of tool that fills this gap is third-party phone-as-webcam software, which normally means installing an app on the phone, a companion app on the computer, and a virtual camera driver alongside it.
2. Treat that installation as a decision, not a step. A virtual camera driver runs deep in the system and sits in the path of every video call you make, so it belongs on a personal computer far more comfortably than on a work laptop.
3. Expect it to be blocked on a managed work laptop, and recognize the block when you see it: the installer stops with a message about needing administrator permission or being prevented by your organization's policy, or it appears to install and then no new camera ever shows up in the app list because the driver was refused.
4. If you genuinely need this route on a work machine, ask IT whether any phone-as-webcam tool is approved, name the one you were considering, mention that it installs a virtual camera driver, and say that your built-in camera has failed. Many IT teams would rather post you a USB webcam, which is a faster answer for both of you.
5. Use the route that needs nothing installed while you wait: join the meeting from the phone's own Teams, Zoom or Meet app and use the laptop for the shared screen and chat. Mute the laptop's microphone and speaker so the two devices do not echo. Your camera works, your face is at a sensible angle, and nothing was installed on a work laptop.

5. Select the phone as your camera in Teams, Zoom or Meet

Turning the feature on makes the phone available; each meeting app still needs telling to use it, and every one of them hides that in a different place.

1. In Microsoft Teams, click Settings and more (the three dots beside your profile picture), choose Settings, then Devices. Under Camera, pick your phone from the dropdown and check the preview underneath.
2. During a Teams call, use More > Settings > Device settings in the meeting controls instead. The same Camera dropdown appears in the panel on the right.
3. In Zoom, click the gear icon to open Settings, choose Video, and pick your phone from the Camera dropdown. Inside a meeting, click the ^ arrow beside Stop Video and choose your phone under Select a Camera.
4. In Google Meet, join the call, click More options (the three dots at the bottom), choose Settings, then Video, and pick your phone under Camera. The browser may ask for camera permission the first time — allow it.
5. If the phone is not in a dropdown, close the meeting app completely and reopen it. These apps build the camera list when they start, so anything connected afterwards is invisible until a restart.

6. Position the phone so the shot looks better than your laptop did

Camera quality is only half of it — the reason phone shots often look worse than a bad laptop camera is that the phone ends up in the wrong place.

1. Set the lens at or slightly above eye level. A phone lying flat on the desk points up your nose, which is a worse look than any laptop camera manages.
2. Turn the phone to landscape. Meeting apps use a widescreen frame, and a portrait phone gives them a narrow strip to crop from.
3. Sit about an arm's length away and frame yourself from the chest up, with a small gap above your head.
4. Put your light source in front of you. A bright window behind you turns you into a silhouette no camera can rescue.
5. Use the rear camera when the app lets you choose. It is the better camera on almost every phone, and it is what a Mac uses with Continuity Camera by default.
6. Check the preview inside the meeting app before you join rather than after, since the app's own crop is what other people will see.

7. Keep the phone charged and quiet for the whole call

Running the camera is one of the heaviest things a phone does, and an interruption on the phone is now an interruption on your video.

1. Plug the phone into a charger before the call starts, not when the battery warning appears. A phone that shuts down mid-meeting takes your video with it.
2. Take the phone out of a thick case if it starts to feel hot. Phones reduce camera quality as they heat up, which shows as a softer, stuttering picture partway through a long call.
3. Turn on Do Not Disturb. On Android, open Settings and search for do not disturb; on an iPhone, open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb, or tap the crescent moon in Control Center. Turning it back off afterwards restores every notification you would have had.
4. Check that an incoming phone call will not take over. On most phones a voice call interrupts the camera, so silence calls as well as notifications for the duration.
5. Leave the phone alone once the call starts. Picking it up to check a message moves your camera.

8. Fall back cleanly when the call starts in two minutes

Stopping and joining without video is a better outcome than a scramble that runs into the first ten minutes of the meeting.

1. Set yourself a hard cut-off. If the camera is not working five minutes before the call, stop configuring and join.
2. Join with the camera off and post one line in the meeting chat, such as Camera is down on my laptop today — audio only, sorry. It takes five seconds and removes every question about it.
3. Join from your phone's meeting app instead if video genuinely matters for this call — a demo to a client, an interview. Mute the laptop's microphone and speakers first so the two devices do not feed back.

Troubleshooting

WARNING

Think twice before installing phone-as-webcam software on a work laptop. These tools add a virtual camera driver that sits in the path of every video call you make, and on a managed laptop the installer will usually be blocked anyway. Ask IT whether an approved option exists — and mention that a plug-in USB webcam solves the same problem with nothing installed.

A webcam app installer stops with a policy or administrator message	Your organization blocks unapproved software on the laptop	Ask IT whether a phone-as-webcam tool is approved, name the app, mention that it installs a virtual camera driver, and say your built-in camera has failed. Join from your phone's meeting app until they answer.
The picture freezes or stutters after ten minutes	The phone is overheating, or Wi-Fi is congested	Plug the phone in, take it out of its case, and turn off background blur and beauty effects in the meeting app.
The video drops when someone rings you	Do Not Disturb is off and a voice call took the camera	Turn on Do Not Disturb as in step 7, then reselect the camera in the meeting app.
