Monitor listings lead with the specifications that matter least for office work — refresh rate, response time, gaming certifications — and bury the two that decide whether you are comfortable at the end of a working day: the size-to-resolution pairing, and whether the stand goes up and down. This guide covers what to look at, in order of how much it will affect your day, and names the trade-offs honestly rather than declaring a winner.

This is the decision everything else follows from, and it is the one people get wrong. Size and resolution are not independent choices — they combine into pixel density, and pixel density decides whether text looks sharp at 100% scaling.

Check your desk depth before choosing a size. A 27-inch monitor wants roughly 60 to 80 centimetres between your eyes and the screen. A 32-inch wants more. On a shallow desk, a large monitor forces you to move your head to read the edges, which is worse than a smaller screen at the right distance.
Note: Scaling is not a defect and mixed scaling is not either — it is how Windows keeps text readable on dense panels. The friction appears when two monitors run at different scaling percentages and you drag a window between them, or when an older application ignores the scaling factor. Matching the pixel density across both monitors avoids the first problem entirely, which is a strong argument for buying two identical panels rather than adding a mismatched second one.
Three technologies dominate, and for office work the choice is close to settled.
If a listing does not state the panel type, it is usually TN or a low-tier VA. Reputable business ranges always publish it.
Refresh rate is measured in hertz and describes how many times a second the panel redraws. It is the specification most aggressively marketed and least relevant to office work.
Two honest caveats. First, once you have used a high-refresh screen, going back to 60Hz is noticeable — so if you buy a 120Hz monitor for your desk, expect your laptop screen to feel worse afterwards. Second, driving a high refresh rate at a high resolution needs bandwidth, and that is where laptops run out of capability. A 4K panel at 144Hz needs a connection many business laptops cannot supply, and the monitor will quietly run at 60Hz instead. Check Step 4 before paying for a rate your machine cannot reach.
Ignore response time and the gaming certifications entirely. Anything sold as an office or business monitor is fast enough for text.
The monitor is only half the equation. Buying a 4K panel and discovering your laptop outputs 1080p over its only spare port is a common and avoidable disappointment.
Note: Two external monitors from one USB-C port is not guaranteed. It depends on the laptop's graphics chip, whether the port supports DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport, and in some cases a driver that is not installed by default. Both give you more room. They give you different kinds of room, and the right answer depends on how you work rather than which is better.
A single ultrawide — typically 34 inches at 3440x1440 — suits you if:

The honest trade-offs. An ultrawide costs more than two mid-range monitors of equivalent total area. Window management needs help — Windows Snap Layouts handles it well, but the default half-and-half split on a 34-inch ultrawide produces two very wide, short windows that suit few applications. Desk depth matters more, because the far edges of a flat ultrawide sit further from your eyes than the centre. And a single ultrawide is a single point of failure: when it goes wrong, you have no screen at all, whereas two monitors leave you working on one.
There is no universally correct answer here. If you genuinely do not know, two 27-inch 1440p monitors is the lower-risk choice, because you can start with one.
This is the section to read if you skip the rest. Panel specifications affect how the screen looks. The stand affects how your neck feels at 5pm, and that is the difference you will notice every single day.
Height adjustment is the specification that matters most and is advertised least. The top of the screen should sit at or slightly below eye level when you are sitting upright. A monitor fixed too low pulls your head forward and down for eight hours, which is the most common cause of neck and upper-back ache at a desk. Many budget monitors ship with a stand that tilts and does nothing else.
Look for:
VESA mounting is the escape hatch. VESA is the standard hole pattern on the back of a monitor — normally four screw holes in a 100mm square, sometimes 75mm on smaller panels. If a monitor has it, you can discard the supplied stand and put the panel on a desk arm.

Verification: Sit upright in your normal working posture and look straight ahead without moving your head. Your eyes should land on the top quarter of the screen. If you are looking down at the middle of the panel, it is too low; if you are tipping your head back, it is too high.
The last decision, and it is decided by your room rather than your preference.
For any office, home or otherwise, choose matte unless you have full control over the lighting in the room.
Tip: Check the reflection before you commit if you can see the monitor in person. Turn the screen off in a lit room and look at it. A matte panel shows a soft grey haze. A glossy one shows the room behind you in focus — including the window.
TIP
Before choosing a size, put a sheet of paper the same width as the monitor you are considering where the screen would sit, at the distance you would actually use it. A 34-inch ultrawide is roughly 80cm across, and desks that look spacious frequently are not. Doing this costs two minutes and prevents the most expensive return.
