How to Print a Web Page Without the Clutter

Applies to: Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome; Windows 11, Windows 10
Article Type: How-To
Last Updated: 2026-07-29

Summary

A web page printed straight from the browser wastes paper on navigation bars, cookie banners, ads, and comment threads, and puts the web address across the top of every sheet. This article shows you how to get a clean, readable copy — on paper or as a PDF — using controls that are already in the print dialog.

Prerequisites

  • Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome on Windows 11 or Windows 10.
  • A printer set up if you are printing to paper. Nothing is needed to save as a PDF — that route works with no printer at all.
  • No admin rights required for any step in this guide.

Instructions

1. Open the Print Preview and Read It Before You Print

The preview is the whole game. Two seconds spent reading it saves a tray of paper.

  1. Open the page you want to print.
  2. Press Ctrl + P. A print dialog opens with a live preview of the printed result — Edge puts the settings on the left and the preview on the right; Chrome puts the preview on the left and the settings on the right.
  3. Read the sheet count at the top of the settings pane. Chrome states it plainly, for example Total: 14 sheets of paper; Edge shows the page count above the preview.
  4. Scroll the preview with the arrows or your mouse wheel and look for the giveaways: a navigation menu on sheet 1, blank or near-blank sheets in the middle, and comments or "related stories" filling the last third.
  5. Leave the dialog open. Every fix below happens inside it, and the preview updates as you change each setting.

Tip: If the dialog that opens looks like a Windows printer properties box rather than the browser's own preview, you opened the system dialog. Close it and press Ctrl + P again from inside the browser window. The browser's own dialog is the one with the live preview and the settings described below.

2. Cut the Clutter in More Settings

Everything that turns a 14-sheet dump into a 4-sheet document lives behind one expander.

  1. In the print dialog, click More settings at the bottom of the settings pane. The pane expands with several more controls.
  2. Clear the Headers and footers checkbox. This removes the page title, the web address, the date, and the page numbers from the top and bottom of every sheet.
  3. Clear the Background graphics checkbox. This drops coloured panels, background images, and shaded blocks, which saves a great deal of toner and usually improves readability.
  4. Open the Margins dropdown and choose the narrowest option — Minimum in Chrome, Narrow in Edge. More text fits per sheet, so the total drops.
  5. Open the Scale dropdown. Leave it on Default unless the preview shows content running off the right edge; in that case pick Fit to printable area, or choose Custom and type a value such as 80.
  6. Set Pages per sheet to 2 when the content is a reference you will scan rather than read closely. This halves the paper again.
  7. Watch the sheet count as you go. It updates with every change.

Note: Leave Background graphics on for one case — a page where colour carries meaning, such as a colour-coded status table or a chart whose series are told apart only by their fill. Everywhere else it is wasted toner.

3. Use Reading View to Strip Navigation and Ads First

The settings above trim the page. Reading view removes the clutter entirely before the print dialog ever sees it.

  1. In Microsoft Edge, press F9 on an article page, or click the book icon at the right end of the address bar. The page reloads in Immersive Reader — article text and inline images only, with navigation, ads, and sidebars gone.
  2. Press Ctrl + P while Immersive Reader is active. The preview now shows the stripped-down layout, and the sheet count typically falls by half or more.
  3. Print or save from there as normal. Press F9 again afterwards to return the page to normal.
  4. In Google Chrome, reading mode lives in the side panel and does not feed the print dialog — printing while it is open still prints the full page. Use the selection method in step 5 instead, or save the page as a PDF from Edge if you have it.

For the full set of reading view controls in both browsers, see How to Enable Reading Mode in Your Browser.

Verification: With Immersive Reader on, the print preview shows the article headline at the top of sheet 1 with no site menu above it. If a navigation bar is still there, Immersive Reader did not engage — the book icon only appears on pages the browser recognises as articles.

4. Save as PDF Instead of Printing

For most reasons people print a web page — keeping a receipt, filing a policy, sending a page to someone, attaching evidence to a ticket — a PDF is the better answer. It costs nothing, it is searchable, and it keeps the layout exactly as previewed.

  1. In the print dialog, open the Printer dropdown (Edge) or the Destination dropdown (Chrome).
  2. Select Save as PDF.
  3. Apply the same More settings changes from step 2 — headers, footers, background graphics, and margins all carry into the PDF.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Choose a folder and a filename, then click Save again. The PDF appears in the folder you picked.

Note: The list also contains Microsoft Print to PDF, which is a Windows feature rather than a browser one. Save as PDF keeps the text selectable and the links clickable; Microsoft Print to PDF flattens the page, so links stop working. Choose Save as PDF unless an app specifically needs the flattened version. For saving documents from Office apps and Outlook the same way, see How to Save or Print Any Document as a PDF.

5. Print Only the Text You Selected

When you need one table, one recipe, or one paragraph, print that and nothing else.

  1. Drag across the text you want on the page to highlight it. Include any table or image inside the selection.
  2. Press Ctrl + P with the text still highlighted.
  3. In Microsoft Edge, open the Pages dropdown at the top of the settings pane and choose Selection.
  4. In Google Chrome, click More settings and tick Selection only under Options.
  5. The preview redraws to show only the highlighted content, and the sheet count drops to match.
  6. Click Print or Save.

Tip: In Edge you can skip a step — highlight the text, right-click inside the highlight, and choose Print. The dialog opens with Selection already chosen.

6. Print a Specific Range of Pages

Once the preview is clean, you often need only some of it — the three sheets carrying the table, not the eleven around them.

  1. Scroll the preview and note the sheet numbers you want. These are the preview's own numbers, not any page numbering the website shows.
  2. Open the Pages dropdown at the top of the settings pane.
  3. Choose Custom (Chrome) or Custom range (Edge). A text box appears beside the dropdown.
  4. Type the sheets you want. A hyphen gives a range and commas separate entries — 2-5 prints four sheets, and 1,4,9-11 prints six.
  5. Check the preview and the sheet count, then click Print.

Note: The Pages dropdown also carries Odd pages only and Even pages only. Those two are how you print double-sided on a printer without a duplex unit: print the odd sheets, flip the stack, then print the even ones. For setting duplex as the default on a printer that supports it, see How to Manage Default Printers and Print Settings on Windows.

7. Fix a Page That Prints Blank or Cut Off

Two failures account for nearly all bad web printouts, and both are fixed inside the print dialog.

  1. For sheets that come out blank or nearly blank: close the dialog, press End to jump to the bottom of the page so every section loads, scroll back to the top, then press Ctrl + P again. Pages that load their content as you scroll have nothing to print until you have scrolled it.
  2. If the preview is still blank, the site's own print styling is hiding the content. Highlight the text you need and use the Selection method in step 5, or switch to Immersive Reader with F9 in Edge and print from there.
  3. For content cut off at the right edge: the page uses a fixed-width layout wider than your paper. Open the Layout dropdown and choose Landscape. The preview redraws wider and usually captures the full width.
  4. If landscape is not enough, open Scale, choose Custom, and type 80. Check the preview and adjust the number down in steps of five until nothing is clipped.
  5. For a printout where everything is enormous: your browser zoom is above 100 percent and it carries into the print job. Close the dialog, press Ctrl + 0 to reset the zoom to 100 percent, then press Ctrl + P again.

Verification: In the corrected preview, the right-hand edge of every sheet shows white margin rather than text running to the paper edge, and no sheet is empty.

Troubleshooting

TIP

Build the habit in this order: F9 for reading view (Edge), Ctrl + P, clear Headers and footers and Background graphics, then Save as PDF. Those four moves turn almost any page into a clean, filed, searchable copy in about fifteen seconds, and they use no paper at all.
