1. Myth: "Leaving It Plugged In Overnight Ruins the Battery"

Why people believe it: it used to be true. Nickel-cadmium packs kept drawing current after they were full, and the surplus turned into heat inside the cell. Anyone who owned a laptop in the 1990s was told to unplug at 100%, and they were told correctly.

What actually happens now: the charging circuit in your laptop stops charging at 100% and runs the machine from wall power instead. There is no trickle, no overcharge, and no benefit to unplugging the moment it fills.

The real cost is slower and quieter. Lithium-ion cells age faster when they sit at a high state of charge, and faster again when they are warm. A laptop that lives on a dock at 100% in a warm office loses measurable capacity over two years compared with one that spends its time between 20% and 80%. That is a months-long effect, not an overnight one.

Verification: With a charge limit active, the battery icon settles at around 80% and stops climbing, and hovering it shows a message such as Plugged in, not charging. That message is the setting working, not a fault.

What to do: if your laptop lives on a dock five days a week, turn the limit on. If you unplug and carry it around most days, leave it alone — overnight charging by itself is not the problem.

2. Myth: "You Have to Run It Flat to Recalibrate the Battery"

Why people believe it: the memory effect was real. Nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal-hydride cells that were repeatedly topped up from half-empty did lose usable capacity, and a full discharge genuinely restored it. Anyone who learned batteries on that hardware learned this rule.

What actually happens now: lithium-ion has no memory effect at all. Deep discharges are the single most stressful thing you can do to the cell. Battery life is rated in charge cycles, and one 100%-to-0% run costs more of that rating than several shallow top-ups covering the same total energy. Running the battery flat on purpose spends the thing you are trying to preserve.

There is one grain of truth left. The fuel gauge — the software that estimates the percentage — can drift on a laptop that never moves far from 100%, so the machine shuts down while reporting 30% left. That is the meter being wrong, not the battery being tired, and a single controlled discharge resets it:

  1. Unplug the laptop and use it normally until Windows hibernates or shuts down on its own.
  2. Leave it off, plugged in, and charge to 100% without interruption.
  3. Use it normally again. The percentage now tracks reality.

Note: Do this once or twice a year at most, and only when the percentage reading is visibly wrong. Doing it monthly is wear with nothing to show for it.

3. Myth: "Closing Background Apps Saves Meaningful Battery"

Why people believe it: it is a habit carried over from phones, and it was more true a decade ago when background apps polled the network constantly and operating systems did far less to suspend them.

What actually happens now: the screen and the CPU dominate everything else. Your display at full brightness draws several times what a tray full of idle apps does. Dropping brightness from 100% to about 50% buys more runtime than closing every background app on the machine, and it takes one keystroke.

Idle is the important word. An app that is actually working is a real drain: a video call, OneDrive catching up on a large sync, a browser tab playing video, a spreadsheet recalculating a large model. Windows tells you which one:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click the Processes tab.
  3. Scroll right to the Power usage column and click the header to sort by it. Each app is rated Very low, Low, Moderate, High, or Very high.
  4. Anything sitting at High or Very high while you are not using it is worth closing. Everything below Moderate is noise.

Tip: Sort by Power usage rather than CPU. Power usage folds in disk and graphics activity, so it catches the sync client or video tab that a CPU-only view misses.

4. Myth: "Third-Party Chargers Destroy Batteries"

Why people believe it: counterfeit chargers earned this reputation honestly. Uncertified bricks and cables that skipped the protection circuitry have damaged laptops and started fires, and the warning got generalized into "never use anything but the original".

What actually happens now: a reputable third-party charger that matches your laptop's wattage and carries proper certification is fine. USB-C Power Delivery is a negotiation — the charger and the laptop agree on voltage and current before meaningful power flows, and the laptop never draws more than it asks for.

Two things genuinely matter, and neither is the brand on the box:

  • Wattage. A 45 W charger plugged into a laptop that wants 90 W charges slowly, or holds level while you work and drains once you open something heavy. Check the number printed on your original power brick and match or exceed it.
  • Certification. Look for the USB-IF certification logo on USB-C cables and a recognized safety mark — UL, CE, or UKCA — molded into the charger body. Cables are where the corner-cutting concentrates, so a certified cable matters more than a premium brand of charger.

Note: If your workplace issues chargers, use the issued one. It is covered by the hardware warranty and IT replaces it without a purchase request. Tell IT: "I need a replacement power adapter for my laptop" and give them the asset tag from the underside of the machine.

5. Myth: "Battery Health Should Stay at 100%"

Why people believe it: this one is recent. Phones started showing a battery health percentage, people started watching it, and a number that only moves downward feels like a fault developing.

What actually happens now: lithium-ion capacity declines from the day the cell is manufactured, whether the laptop is used or sitting in a warehouse. Losing 10–15% of original capacity across the first two years of daily use is normal and expected. Manufacturer warranties reflect this — most guarantee roughly 80% of the original capacity after a stated number of charge cycles, not 100%.

Here is what your own battery is doing. The first three steps are three routes to the same two numbers — take whichever one fits your machine:

  1. Open your manufacturer's own app — Lenovo Vantage, Dell Power Manager, HP Support Assistant, or the Surface app — and look for its battery health or battery condition screen. It reports the same capacity figures with nothing to type.
  2. On a Mac, open System Settings > Battery and click the info button beside Battery Health.
  3. If your laptop has none of those apps, ask IT for the figures: "Please run the Windows battery report on DEVICE-NAME and send me the Full Charge Capacity and Design Capacity — I think the battery needs assessing."
  4. Find the Installed batteries section. That is the heading in the Windows battery report; the manufacturer apps put the same two figures under a heading such as Battery health or Battery condition.
  5. Compare Full Charge Capacity against Design Capacity. A machine two years into service typically sits somewhere around 85–90%.

Decline is normal. These are the readings worth acting on:

  • Full Charge Capacity below about 60% of Design Capacity — the battery is at the end of its useful life and the laptop lasts a fraction of a workday unplugged.
  • Unexpected shutdowns above 20% that survive the recalibration in Section 2 — the cell can no longer hold voltage under load.
  • A visibly swollen battery — a trackpad that has lifted, a case that no longer sits flat, or a lid with a gap. Stop using the laptop and follow What to Do If Your Laptop Battery Is Swollen.

When you raise the ticket, tell IT: "My laptop reports a Full Charge Capacity of X mWh against a Design Capacity of Y mWh, and I would like the battery assessed for replacement." Attach a screenshot of the battery health screen, or the battery-report.html file if you have one, so they have the figures without a callback.

Optional, if you are comfortable with a command line: Windows writes the same two figures into a report of its own. Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Windows 11) or Windows PowerShell (Windows 10), type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. The window prints a file path, normally C:\Users\YourName\battery-report.html — open that file in your browser and read the Installed batteries table near the top. The command changes nothing on the machine; it writes a report file you can delete once IT has the figures.
