1. Check Which Version You Are On

Version numbers matter more than they look. Support dates, feature availability, and half the troubleshooting advice on the internet all hinge on this one value.

1. Press Windows + R to open the Run box in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
2. Type winver and press Enter.
3. Read the About Windows dialog that opens. The second line reads Version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.xxxx) or similar. The part before the parenthesis is your feature update version; the build number after it changes with every monthly patch.
4. Click OK to close the dialog.

An alternative route with more detail: press Windows + I, click System in the left sidebar, then About. Expand Windows specifications and read the Version and OS build values. This page also names your Edition — Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Home — which determines how long your version stays supported.

Note: The naming pattern is consistent and worth learning. The first two digits are the year, and H1 or H2 is the half of the year. 25H2 is the second-half 2025 release, 24H2 the second-half 2024 one. Microsoft has shipped one feature update per year for Windows 11, in the autumn.

2. Understand Who Decides When You Get It

This is the part that causes the most confusion, so it is worth being direct about it.

On a work computer managed by your IT department, you do not choose when a feature update installs. IT sets a deferral policy that holds machines back until the version has been tested against the applications your organisation depends on — line-of-business apps, VPN clients, security agents, and specialist hardware drivers. That testing is why a new version often reaches office computers months after it reaches the news.

Practical consequences:

• Clicking Check for updates will not pull a feature update forward. In Settings > Windows Update, that button fetches what your organisation has approved. If 25H2 is not approved for your group yet, nothing appears no matter how many times you click.
• A banner offering the update is real when it appears. When IT does release it to you, Settings > Windows Update shows the version by name with a Download and install button. That is your genuine invitation.
• You often control the timing, not the decision. Use Schedule the restart on the update page to pick an hour that is not the middle of a deadline. Set your active hours under Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours so Windows never restarts during your working day.
• A personal machine is different. Home and unmanaged computers receive feature updates directly from Microsoft, rolled out in waves by hardware model. A machine that has not been offered it yet is waiting in the queue, not broken.

Tip: If you need a specific version for a reason — a vendor tool that requires it, or a compliance deadline — that is a reasonable ticket. Tell IT: "I need Windows 11 25H2 for a supported version of our design software. Can my machine be moved into an earlier update ring?" Naming the business reason is what gets it actioned.

3. What an Annual Windows Update Actually Changes

Feature update coverage tends to focus on headline features. What actually affects your working day is smaller and more mundane. Across recent Windows 11 annual updates, the changes fall into the same five areas every time.

• The Start menu. Layout, the size and grouping of the pinned area, how the All apps list is reached, and what appears under Recommended. Pinned tiles survive updates; their arrangement sometimes does not.
• The taskbar and system tray. Icon grouping, which indicators are shown by default, the behaviour of the clock and notification area, and what a right-click on the taskbar offers. Third-party taskbar customisation tools are the software most likely to break on a feature update.
• File Explorer. Tabs, the address bar, the right-click context menu, the Home view, and archive format support. This is the area Microsoft has revised most often, and the one people notice first.
• Settings. Pages get renamed, merged, and moved between sections. A setting you have opened a hundred times can land two clicks away from where it was. The search box at the top of Settings finds anything faster than hunting through the sidebar.
• Copilot and AI features. Where the entry point lives — taskbar button, keyboard key, or app — and what it is permitted to do. On a work machine, what Copilot can access is governed by your organisation's licensing and policy, not by the Windows version alone.

What does not change: your files, your installed applications, your user profile, your desktop layout, and your saved passwords. A feature update is an in-place upgrade. It replaces Windows system components and leaves the rest alone.

Note on how 25H2 installs: For machines already on 24H2, Microsoft has delivered recent annual updates as a small enablement package — the new code ships inside earlier monthly updates in a dormant state, and the feature update switches it on. In practice that means a short download and a single restart rather than the hour-long full reinstall a jump from an older version requires. 4. Why the Version Number Matters — Support Windows

Every annual version has a fixed end-of-servicing date. This is the single most important reason to care about the number in winver.

• Each version is supported for a fixed period from its release — 24 months for Home and Pro editions, 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Your edition is listed in Settings > System > About.
• Two of those dates are already published. Microsoft's list of products ending support in 2026 gives Windows 11 Home and Pro, Version 24H2 an end of servicing date of October 13, 2026, and gives Windows 11 Enterprise and Education, Version 23H2 — along with Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, Version 23H2 — November 10, 2026. Match a date to your version and your edition together, both of which Step 1 shows you where to read. Any other combination is not named on that list.
• The remaining combinations are on Microsoft's Windows 11 release information page. That table carries an end-of-updates date for every version against both edition groups. Version 25H2 ends on October 12, 2027 for Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations, and on October 10, 2028 for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise and Enterprise multi-session. Version 24H2 ends on October 12, 2027 on those same Enterprise and Education editions. Version 23H2 has already reached end of updates on Home and Pro — Microsoft's list of products ending support in 2025 puts that date at November 11, 2025.
• When that window closes, monthly security updates stop for that version. Not slow down — stop. The computer continues to run, applications continue to open, and newly discovered vulnerabilities go unpatched indefinitely.
• Moving to the current version restarts the clock. This is the whole reason feature updates are mandatory in managed environments, and why "I would rather stay on the version I know" is not an option IT can grant for long.
• Support dates are per version, not per device. Two identical laptops on different versions have different deadlines.

If your organisation has left you on a version approaching its end date, that is worth raising rather than waiting. Tell IT: "My machine is on Windows 11 24H2 and I want to confirm it is scheduled to move before that version's servicing date. Which update ring am I in?"

5. The 15-Minute Check After Any Feature Update

This checklist is deliberately version-independent. These six things are what a feature update disturbs, on every release, and each takes under two minutes to verify. Run it the first morning after the update rather than discovering a problem in front of a client.

1. Pinned apps and the taskbar. Look at your taskbar and Start menu. Confirm the apps you use daily are still pinned and still open the version you expect. If a pin has become a shortcut to the Microsoft Store instead of the installed app, unpin it and re-pin from Start > All apps.
2. Default browser and PDF handler. Open a link from an email and open a PDF from a folder. If either opens in something unexpected, reset it in Settings > Apps > Default apps — How to Change Default Apps in Windows 11 covers the per-file-type routine, which is the part people miss.
3. Printer defaults. Press Ctrl + P in any application and read the printer named at the top. Feature updates re-detect printers, and a machine that has ever seen more than one printer can come back pointing at the wrong floor. Reset it in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
4. Audio input and output. Start a call with yourself in Teams or open Settings > System > Sound and confirm the correct headset is selected under both Output and Input. Windows re-enumerates audio devices during an update and often reverts to the built-in speakers and microphone.
5. VPN client. Connect to the VPN before you need it, not five minutes before a meeting. VPN and endpoint security clients install low-level network components, and those are exactly the components a feature update replaces. If the client fails to connect, reinstalling it is the standard fix and usually needs admin rights. Tell IT: "My VPN client stopped connecting after the Windows 11 25H2 update. Please reinstall it."
6. OneDrive sync state. Look for the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray, near the clock — click the up arrow (^) if hidden. A blue cloud with no overlay means synced. A red circle with a white cross means sync has stopped and your recent work is sitting only on this machine. Click the icon and sign in again if prompted.

Tip: Run this same list after any major update, not only annual ones. It also catches the aftermath of a new laptop, a driver rollout, or a profile rebuild.

6. What to Do If Something Broke

A feature update that leaves something visibly wrong has three routes out, in order of how much they cost you.

1. Restart once more before concluding anything. The first boot after a feature update finishes installing drivers and rebuilding caches in the background. A second restart resolves a surprising share of first-morning oddities.
2. Check for a patch. Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. Microsoft ships fixes for widely reported feature-update problems within the first few monthly cycles, and the fix for your issue may already be waiting.
3. Roll back, within the window. Go to Settings > System > Recovery and look for Go back. This returns the computer to the previous version. The option is available for a limited number of days after the update — commonly 10 — after which Windows deletes the old version files to reclaim disk space and the button greys out.

Feature update rollouts are staged deliberately. Being offered the update later than a colleague is normal — Microsoft and IT departments both release in waves by hardware model and department, watching for problems before widening. A machine that has not been offered 25H2 is in the queue, not stuck.
