Summary

If your team is constantly losing track of important links, onboarding documents, or project trackers, you don't need IT to build you a complex SharePoint site. You can build a beautiful, secure internal website in about 15 minutes using Google Sites. It requires zero coding knowledge and integrates perfectly with Google Drive.

Prerequisites

  • You must have a Google Workspace account.
  • You should gather all the links and Google Drive files you want to share before you start.

Instructions

1. Create the Site

  1. Go to sites.google.com in your web browser.
  2. Click the Blank site button (the plus sign +) at the top left to start a new project.
  3. Give your site a name in the top left corner (e.g., "Marketing Hub").
  4. Click on the large header text that says "Your Page Title" and change it to your team's name.

2. Add Content and Layouts

Google Sites uses a simple drag-and-drop builder located on the right side of the screen.

  1. Look at the Insert panel on the right.
  2. Under the Layouts section, click one of the predefined layouts (like a picture with text next to it) to instantly add a perfectly formatted block to your page.
  3. Click the + icon inside the layout block you added.
  4. Select From Drive to embed a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide presentation directly onto the page.
  5. Use the Text box and Button tools in the right panel to add headings and clickable links to external websites.

3. Customize the Look

You can make the site match your team's vibe without touching a line of code.

  1. Click the Themes tab on the far right panel (next to "Pages").
  2. Select a theme (like "Aristotle" or "Vision") to change the font styles globally.
  3. Hover over the large header image at the top of your page.
  4. Click Change image > Select image to pick a stock background, or upload your own team photo.

4. Publish and Share

Unlike a public website, you want this to be restricted only to your company.

  1. Click the blue Publish button in the top right corner.
  2. Under "Web address", type a short URL for your site (e.g., marketing-hub).
  3. Look closely at the "Who can view my site" section. It will say "Anyone at [Your Company]".
  4. If it says "Anyone on the web", click Manage and change the Published Site setting to be restricted to your organization.
  5. Click Publish. You can now copy the link and send it to your team.

Troubleshooting

WARNING

When you embed a Google Doc or Google Drive folder on your site, Google Sites does not change the permissions of that file. If the file itself is set to "Private", your coworkers will see a "You need permission" error where the document should be. You must ensure the original Drive files are shared with your team.
