Symptoms

• You double-click an Excel file, but only a blank, grey Excel window opens.

• The window is a plain white screen where your spreadsheet should be.
• Nothing happens at all when you double-click the file — Excel never appears.

Instructions

1. Disable "Ignore other applications that use DDE"

1. Open a blank Excel workbook.
2. Click File in the top left corner, then click Options at the bottom left.
3. In the Excel Options menu, click Advanced on the left side.
4. Scroll down to the General section (near the bottom).
5. Uncheck the box that says Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).
6. Click OK.
7. Close Excel entirely and try opening your file again.
8. If double-clicking the file still lands you on a blank grey window, Excel's graphics rendering is the next thing to rule out. Continue to Step 2.

2. Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration

1. Open a blank Excel workbook.
2. Click File > Options, then click Advanced.
3. Scroll down to the Display section.
4. Check the box that says Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
5. Click OK, close Excel, and try opening the file again.
6. If the window is still blank with hardware acceleration turned off, check whether the workbook opened into a hidden window. Continue to Step 3.

3. Unhide the Workbook

1. Sometimes, the file actually opens but is hidden.
2. With the blank grey Excel window open, click the View tab at the top.
3. In the Window group, click Unhide.
4. If a small window appears with the name of your file, select it and click OK.
5. If the Unhide button is greyed out or the list that opens is empty, no workbook is hidden and the file itself is the likely fault. Continue to Step 4.

4. Verify Success

1. Double-click the troublesome Excel file from your email or file explorer. The spreadsheet should now load immediately.
2. If the window is still blank, or nothing opens at all, raise a ticket giving the exact file name, where the file reached you from (an email attachment, a shared drive, or a browser download), and the full wording of any error such as There was a problem sending the command to the program.

Troubleshooting

If none of these steps work, the Excel file itself might be corrupted. Try asking the sender to re-send the file or try opening it using Excel for the Web in your browser.
