Article Type: Troubleshooting
Last Updated: 2026-03-09
Summary
If Outlook shows "Working Offline" or "Disconnected" in the status bar, it cannot send or receive emails. This article explains how to go back online and troubleshoot connection issues.
Prerequisites
- An active internet or network connection.
Instructions
1. Toggle Work Offline Mode (Classic Outlook)
The most common cause is the Work Offline button being accidentally toggled on.
- Open Outlook and click the Send / Receive tab on the ribbon.
- Look at the Work Offline button — if it appears highlighted or pressed in, offline mode is active.
- Click Work Offline once to toggle it off.
- Check the status bar at the bottom — it will now show Connected to: Microsoft Exchange or your server name.
2. Toggle Offline Mode (New Outlook)
New Outlook handles connectivity differently but can still enter offline mode.
- Check the top of the New Outlook window for a banner reading
You're working offline. - Click Turn off offline mode on the banner.
- If no banner is visible, close and reopen New Outlook to re-establish the connection.
3. Verify Your Internet Connection
If toggling offline mode does not help, the issue may be your network.
- Open a web browser and navigate to any website (e.g.,
https://outlook.office.com). - If the page does not load, troubleshoot your internet connection first.
- If on VPN, disconnect and reconnect, then check Outlook again.
4. Force Outlook to Reconnect
Restart the connection without restarting Outlook.
- Go to the Send / Receive tab.
- Click Send/Receive All Folders (or press F9).
- If Outlook still shows offline, close Outlook completely and reopen it.
Troubleshooting
INFO
If Outlook repeatedly reverts to offline mode after you toggle it back on, your Exchange server or network may be experiencing intermittent issues. Wait a few minutes and try again.
