1. Improve Physical Airflow

Most overheating starts with blocked vents, and ruling that out costs nothing.

  1. Move your laptop to a hard, flat surface (like a desk or table). Using it on a bed, couch, or your lap blocks the bottom air vents.
  2. Ensure there is at least a few inches of clearance around the side and back vents of the laptop.
  3. If the vents look dusty, gently blow the dust out.

If the laptop was already sitting on a hard desk with the vents clear and it is still hot, airflow is not the cause. Continue to Step 2.

2. Close Power-Hungry Applications

A single runaway app holds the processor at full speed and keeps the fans loud all day.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
  2. Click on the CPU column header to sort the list by what is using the most processor power.
  3. If you see a non-essential app consistently using a high percentage of the CPU (e.g., above 30%), select it and click End task.

If nothing in the list holds more than about 10% of the CPU and the fans stay at full speed, no runaway app is driving the heat. Continue to Step 3.

3. Adjust Your Power Plan

Telling Windows to favor efficiency over raw speed lowers the heat the processor produces.

  1. Click the Battery icon in the bottom right corner of your taskbar.
  2. In Windows 11, click the Power mode dropdown and select Balanced or Best power efficiency instead of Best performance.
  3. In Windows 10, click the battery icon and drag the slider to the middle or left.

If the power mode was already on Balanced, or the fans are still roaring the moment you change it, give the laptop time to cool before deciding this did not work. Continue to Step 4.

4. Verify Success

Give the laptop 10-15 minutes to settle, then check the fan noise and how warm the case feels.

  1. After making these changes, wait 10-15 minutes to see if the fans quiet down and the laptop's temperature drops.

If the fans are still at full speed after 15 minutes on a hard surface with nothing heavy running, the cooling hardware needs attention. Raise a ticket with the model and serial from Settings > System > About, whether the laptop shuts itself down on its own, and whether it runs hot when idle as well as under load.
