Summary ​

By default, most browsers open PDFs (and sometimes Word or Excel files) in a built-in viewer. This article shows you how to change that behavior so files download and open in their desktop application — such as Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Excel. If a PDF won't open in Acrobat no matter what you click, or every attachment lands in a browser tab, this is the setting to change.

Before You Start ​

1. Change the Default PDF App in Windows ​

This tells Windows which program handles PDF files no matter where you open them from.

  1. Open Settings (press Windows key + I).
  2. Go to Apps > Default apps.
  3. In the search bar at the top, type .pdf and press Enter.
  4. The current default app is shown. Click it to see a list of available programs.
  5. Select Adobe Acrobat (or your preferred PDF reader) and click Set default.

2. Stop Microsoft Edge from Opening PDFs ​

Edge has its own built-in PDF viewer that can override your default app choice.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, click Downloads.
  4. Enable the toggle for Ask me what to do with each download.

To go further and fully disable the built-in PDF viewer:

  1. In the left sidebar, click Cookies and site permissions.
  2. Scroll down and click PDF documents.
  3. Enable the toggle for Always download PDF files.
  4. PDFs will now download and open in your system default PDF app.

3. Stop Google Chrome from Opening PDFs ​

Chrome also has a built-in PDF viewer enabled by default.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, click Privacy and security.
  4. Click Site settings.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and expand Additional content settings.
  6. Click PDF documents.
  7. Select Download PDFs.
  8. PDFs will now download and open with your default desktop app.

4. Stop Mozilla Firefox from Opening PDFs ​

Firefox lets you control the behavior for each file type individually.

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Click the hamburger menu (☰) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the Applications section (under General).
  4. In the search bar within this section, type pdf.
  5. Find the Portable Document Format (PDF) row.
  6. Click the dropdown in the Action column and select Use Adobe Acrobat (default) or Always ask.
  7. The change takes effect immediately — no restart required.

5. Set Defaults for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Files ​

If the browser also opens .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx files inline, set their system defaults the same way as PDFs.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. In the search bar, type the extension you want to change (e.g., .docx).
  3. Click the current default app, select Microsoft Word, and click Set default.
  4. Repeat for .xlsx (Excel) and .pptx (PowerPoint) as needed.

Troubleshooting ​

TIP
