Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, find any processes named Microsoft Office Click-to-Run, right-click and select End Task, then try the update again.
Checked against Microsoft 365 Roadmap, Office release notes - Current Channel and between 5 Aug 2026 and 12 Sep 2026. Nothing published in that period has been linked to this guide.
This article covers what to do when Microsoft 365 apps fail to install from the portal, get stuck during an update, or display error codes like 30015, 30016, 30088, or 0-1011. These steps address the most common user-level causes — stuck update processes, insufficient disk space, conflicting Office versions, and corrupted installations — and do not require admin rights unless noted.

Microsoft 365 installations require significant free space. If your drive is nearly full, the install or update will fail silently or with a generic error.
Disk Cleanup, press Enter, select your C: drive, and check items to remove.Office apps cannot update while they are running. A stuck background Office process can silently block the entire update.
OUTLOOK.EXEWINWORD.EXEEXCEL.EXEPOWERPNT.EXETEAMS.EXEOfficeClickToRun.exeThe Click-to-Run service manages all Office updates. If it becomes stuck or unresponsive, updates will not apply.
services.msc and press Enter. If automatic updates are not applying, you can trigger an update directly.
If installation or updates consistently fail, the Office installation itself may be corrupted. The built-in repair tool can fix this without losing any files or settings.
Installed Apps, and press Enter. If updates download but fail to apply, the update cache may contain corrupted files.
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache and press Enter.%programdata%\Microsoft\Office\Updates and press Enter. If repair and cache clearing do not resolve the issue, a clean reinstall is the most reliable fix.
OfficeSetup.exe).The error code is what gets this resolved quickly. Copy the full code from the installer dialogue (for example 30015-1015) and say which stage it appeared at — Quick Repair, Online Repair, or a fresh install from portal.office.com. That tells IT straight away whether they are looking at a licence, a proxy rule, or a broken local install.
Contact your IT helpdesk if:
0-1011, 30088-1015, or 0-1005 error — these often indicate network or proxy restrictions that only IT can resolve.DANGER
Always run Quick Repair first — it is faster and resolves most issues without re-downloading Office. Only escalate to Online Repair or a full reinstall if Quick Repair fails. Your files, settings, and Outlook profile are preserved through both repair options.
