Someone has asked you to put work email on the phone you paid for, and "BYOD" turns out to mean four quite different arrangements with different trade-offs. This article lays out what each one gives you, what your employer manages under it, what it costs you day to day, and what happens when you leave — then points you at the guide for whichever one you pick.

"Put work email on your phone" hides four arrangements that differ in how much of the phone your employer manages, so the first job is working out which one is on the table.
The four, from lightest to heaviest:
Two things are true across all four. First, your employer's controls are aimed at company data, not at you — the detail of what IT can and cannot see under each arrangement is set out in Understanding Company Portal, Device Management, and Your Privacy, and it is worth ten minutes before you decide. Second, none of these is permanent: every one of them can be unwound, and How to Remove a Work Account from Your Personal Phone is the exit for all of them.
This is the lightest arrangement: you add Outlook and Teams like any other app, and your employer's rules apply inside those apps only.
What you get. Work mail, calendar and chat on your phone in about five minutes. No profile, no enrollment, no change to how the rest of the phone behaves.
What your employer manages. The inside of the work apps. Typical rules require a separate PIN or fingerprint to open the work app, block copying text out of a work app into a personal one, stop work attachments being saved to your personal storage, and allow IT to wipe the work data inside those apps remotely. The phone itself stays unmanaged.
What it costs you. A second unlock every time you open work mail, and the copy-and-paste block, which catches people out most often — moving a phone number from a work email to your personal notes app stops working.
When you leave. IT removes the company data from the apps, or your account stops working and the apps go blank. Your photos, messages and personal accounts are never involved.

Enrolment gives you the fullest access and gives your employer the most oversight, and the two go together for a reason.
What you get. Everything option A gives you, plus the things that need the device to be trusted: work Wi-Fi and VPN that configure themselves, company apps installed for you, certificates, and sign-ins that stop asking you to reauthenticate constantly. On many phones this is also the only route to the Android work profile in option C.
What your employer manages. The device, within limits. Enrolment lets IT require a passcode of a set length, require the phone to be encrypted, require a minimum operating system version, and refuse access from a jailbroken or rooted phone. IT can see inventory-type facts — device name, model, OS version, serial number, whether it meets policy — and can install and remove company apps. On a personal enrollment, IT's normal removal action takes the company data and management off the phone rather than erasing it.
What it costs you. Compliance rules you did not choose. If the policy requires a six-digit passcode and yours is four, you change yours. If it requires an OS version your phone can no longer run, you lose access until you replace the phone. You also get an enrollment prompt on the screen that lists what the organization can do — read it rather than tapping through it.
When you leave. You unenrol, or IT does. The work side comes off and the phone goes back to being an ordinary personal phone.

The work profile is a sealed container on an Android phone, and it is the arrangement with the clearest line between work and personal.
What you get. A separate space holding the work apps, marked with a briefcase badge and gathered under a Work tab in the app drawer. You can have both a personal and a work copy of the same app, each signed in to its own account, without them ever seeing each other. Android also lets you pause the work profile, which greys out every work app in one tap and stops their notifications until you turn it back on.
What your employer manages. What is inside the container, and nothing outside it. Your personal apps, photos, messages and accounts are on the other side of a wall the phone enforces.
What it costs you. Two copies of some apps and a tab to switch between, plus a little duplication in your notification list. Availability is the bigger limit: work profiles are an Android feature, they are not available on iPhone, and your organization has to have configured one.
When you leave. Removing the work profile deletes the container and every work app in it in a single action, and touches nothing personal. It is the cleanest exit of the four.

Choosing not to put work on a personal device is a legitimate answer, and it is worth stating plainly because most guides skip it.
What you get. Your phone stays exactly as it is. You read work mail in a browser at outlook.office.com on a computer, or you ask your employer for a work-issued phone.
What your employer manages. Nothing on your phone.
What it costs you. No push notifications and no mobile calendar, which matters in some jobs and not at all in others. Ask yourself honestly whether being unreachable between five and nine is a cost or the point.
The one thing to check first. Multi-factor authentication often runs through Microsoft Authenticator on a personal phone, and that app on its own carries no management — it does not enroll your device or let IT see anything. If you would rather not have even that, ask IT which other sign-in methods your organization allows, and mention that you want an option that does not use a personal device; a hardware security key, a phone call, or a text code are the usual alternatives.
If you want a work device: ask your manager rather than IT, since it is a budget decision. Say what you need it for and how often, which is what turns the request into a quick yes or a clear no.
Read down the column that matters most to you rather than across the rows — the right answer usually falls out of one concern, not all five.

Every option above is reversible, and knowing the exit before you enter is what makes the decision comfortable.
Leaving a job, changing phones, or changing your mind all end the same way: the work side comes off and your personal data stays. Under option A you remove the account inside each app. Under option B you unenrol the phone. Under option C you remove the work profile, which takes every work app with it in one action. Under option D there is nothing to undo.

One thing worth doing before your last day: if Microsoft Authenticator on your phone is still your sign-in method, leave it in place until the account is disabled — removing it early locks you out of your own work account while you still need it.

None of these choices is permanent, and none of them merges your work and personal data. If you pick one and it does not suit you, you can unwind it and pick another — the only genuinely awkward move is enrolling a phone you were never comfortable enrolling and then discovering that on your last week.
