Symptoms ​

  • PowerPoint won't open — nothing happens when you click the icon, or it freezes on the splash screen.
  • PowerPoint crashes immediately after opening or within seconds.
  • PowerPoint opens but crashes when you open a specific presentation.
  • You see error messages like "PowerPoint has stopped working" or "Microsoft PowerPoint is not responding".
  • PowerPoint opens but displays a blank window with no menus or toolbars.

Prerequisites ​

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (desktop version).
  • Windows 11 or Windows 10.

Instructions ​

1. Force Close and Restart PowerPoint ​

End any stuck PowerPoint processes before reopening.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Look for Microsoft PowerPoint in the Processes tab.
  3. Right-click it and select End task. If there are multiple PowerPoint entries, end all of them.
  4. Wait a few seconds, then reopen PowerPoint.

2. Open PowerPoint in Safe Mode ​

Safe Mode disables add-ins and customizations that may cause the crash.

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type powerpnt /safe and press Enter.
  3. PowerPoint opens in Safe Mode (you'll see [Safe Mode] in the title bar).
  4. Try opening your presentation. If it works in Safe Mode, an add-in is likely causing the crash.

TIP

If PowerPoint works in Safe Mode but crashes normally, the issue is almost always a bad add-in. Proceed to Step 3 to find and disable it.

3. Disable Problem Add-ins ​

Remove add-ins one at a time to find the one causing the crash.

  1. Open PowerPoint normally (not Safe Mode).
  2. Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
  3. At the bottom, select COM Add-ins from the Manage dropdown and click Go.
  4. Uncheck all add-ins and click OK.
  5. Restart PowerPoint. If it works, re-enable add-ins one at a time to identify the culprit.

Once you find the problem add-in, leave it disabled and check if an updated version is available.

4. Repair Microsoft Office ​

Fix corrupted Office files without reinstalling.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older builds).
  3. Find Microsoft 365 (or Microsoft Office) in the list.
  4. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) next to it and select Modify.
  5. Select Quick Repair and click Repair.
  6. If Quick Repair doesn't fix the issue, run Online Repair (this takes longer but is more thorough and re-downloads Office components).
  7. Restart PowerPoint after the repair completes.

5. Fix a Specific Corrupted Presentation ​

If PowerPoint opens fine on its own but crashes on one specific file, the file itself may be corrupted.

  1. Open PowerPoint (without the problem file).
  2. Go to File > Open > Browse.
  3. Navigate to the corrupted file but don't double-click it.
  4. Click the dropdown arrow next to the Open button and select Open and Repair.
  5. PowerPoint attempts to repair the file. Save a copy immediately if it opens successfully.

TIP

If Open and Repair fails, try inserting the slides from the corrupted file into a new blank presentation: Open a new presentation > Home > New Slide > Reuse Slides > browse to the corrupted file. This often recovers content even when the file itself is damaged.

6. Update Microsoft Office ​

Outdated Office versions may have known bugs that cause crashes.

  1. Open any Office app (Word or Excel if PowerPoint won't open).
  2. Go to File > Account > Update Options.
  3. Click Update Now. Wait for updates to download and install.
  4. Restart PowerPoint after the update completes.

7. Verify the Fix ​

Confirm PowerPoint is working normally.

  1. Open PowerPoint and create or open a presentation.
  2. If it opens without crashing, the fix worked.
  3. Test with the specific file that was causing issues, if applicable.
