Summary

This article explains what causes the "Your organization's policies are preventing us from completing this action for you" error and what you can do about it.

Symptoms

  • You click a hyperlink in an email or document and receive this error instead of the website opening.
  • You try to install an Office Add-in and this error blocks the installation.
  • You attempt to sign into a non-approved third-party app with your work account.

Before You Start

  • None required.

Instructions

1. Understand Why the Error Happens

This message is a policy doing its job, not a fault to troubleshoot.

  1. This error is almost always intentional. Your IT department has configured Microsoft 365 security policies to block specific actions to protect company data.
  2. It typically occurs when clicking links to known malicious websites, opening files from untrusted sources, or installing unapproved software.

When the block catches a link you trust, opening it outside Outlook tells you whether the site itself is blocked.

  1. If the error occurs when clicking a hyperlink, highlight the link text.
  2. Right-click the highlighted text and select Copy.
  3. Open your web browser (Edge or Chrome), right-click the address bar, and select Paste and go.
  4. (Note: If the website is actually blocked by your company firewall, it still will not load in the browser).

3. Request an Exception

If the blocked action is part of your job, an exception is the route — and a specific ticket gets it faster.

  1. If you believe the blocked action is necessary for your job, you must request an exception from the IT department.
  2. Navigate to your company's IT Help Desk portal.
  3. Submit a ticket detailing exactly what link you are trying to open or what Add-in you are trying to install. Include a screenshot of the error message.

If the error blocks every hyperlink you click, including ones in your own documents, the cause is a missing default web browser rather than a policy. Press the Windows key, type Default apps, press Enter, and set Edge or Chrome as the default browser, then click the link again. If the error survives that, raise a ticket with the full error text, the app it appeared in, and the address of one link that triggers it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does clicking a link in an email give me this error?
This happens when your default web browser is uninstalled or corrupted. Outlook tries to open the link, realizes it has no browser to hand it to, and throws a generic policy error.
Can I bypass this error to install an Add-in?
If your IT department has locked down the Office Add-in store for security reasons, no troubleshooting will bypass it. You must request the specific Add-in from the IT Helpdesk.
