Summary

A swollen laptop battery is a safety problem, not a performance one, and the first few minutes are about handling rather than diagnosis. Before You Start

• None required. Nothing in this guide needs a sign-in, a tool, or admin rights.
• This applies to any laptop with a built-in lithium-ion battery, which covers every business laptop sold in roughly the last fifteen years.
• Have a second device to hand if you can. You will use it to reach IT or the manufacturer, and to keep reading this while the affected laptop stays shut down.

Instructions

1. Stop using the laptop and unplug the charger

Charging a swollen cell adds heat and pressure to a battery that is already failing, so this comes before anything else.

1. Save whatever you are working on, then shut the laptop down properly rather than closing the lid. A closed lid on most modern laptops is sleep, not off, and the machine keeps drawing power.
2. Unplug the charger from the laptop, and unplug the charger from the wall.
3. Disconnect anything else attached to it — dock, external drive, monitor cable, USB devices. This is not about damage to those devices; it is about the laptop being one item you can move in one movement.
4. Do not charge it again, even briefly, and even if someone tells you the machine will be fine for one more day.

2. Make the laptop safe where it sits

A swollen lithium-ion battery has generated gas inside a sealed cell, and pressure, puncturing and heat all make a rupture more likely.

1. Move the laptop onto a hard, bare surface — a desk with nothing on it, a tiled floor, a metal shelf. Keep it off cushions, beds, carpet, paper piles, and anything else that would hold heat or burn.
2. Give it space. Away from other laptops, chargers, spare battery packs, aerosols, and anything flammable stored nearby.
3. Do not press on the bulge to see how soft it is, do not try to flatten it, and do not put anything on top of the laptop. Pressure is the thing you are avoiding.
4. Do not puncture, drill, cut, or pry at the case, and do not attempt to remove the battery yourself. Prying out a swollen pouch cell is the most common way people turn a contained problem into a fire.
5. Keep it out of bags and cases. A closed bag compresses the laptop, holds in heat, and puts the whole thing somewhere nobody is watching it.
6. Leave the lid open a little if it will stay that way on its own. Do not force it — if the lid is being pushed open by the swelling, that is information, not a fault to correct.

3. Confirm the bulge is swelling and not the case shape

Plenty of laptops are designed with a curved or wedge-shaped base, so it is worth ten seconds of checking before you escalate.

1. Set the laptop on a flat, hard surface, closed, and press one corner gently. A healthy laptop sits still on all four feet. One that rocks or pivots around a raised middle is showing you a swollen pack underneath.
2. Look along the seam where the base meets the keyboard deck, at eye level. A designed curve is smooth and even end to end; swelling opens a gap that is widest in the middle and narrows toward the corners.
3. Compare it with an identical model if a colleague has one. This settles the question faster than any other test.
4. Ask whether it changed. A base that has always been slightly domed is the design. A trackpad that clicked normally last month and does not click today is not.
5. Treat these as confirmation and stop using the machine immediately if you notice any of them: a spot on the case that is noticeably hot when the laptop is idle, a sweet or chemical solvent smell, a hissing or popping sound, or any liquid or residue around the seams.

4. Report it to IT the same day if this is a work laptop

At work this is a safety report rather than a support request, and the wording you use decides which queue it lands in.

1. Contact IT directly — a phone call, or a ticket with the word safety in the subject line. Do not wait for a reply to a chat message in a busy channel.
2. Use wording along these lines, which tells them the severity and that the machine is already contained: "My laptop battery is physically swollen and the case is deforming. I have shut it down, unplugged it, and left it on a clear hard surface. This is a safety issue — please tell me how to hand it over."
3. Add the asset tag or serial number from the underside of the machine, the model, and what you noticed first. Take a photo from a low angle so the gap is visible, and attach it — the photo is what gets this treated as urgent rather than routine.
4. Leave the laptop where it is until IT tells you otherwise. Do not carry it around the building looking for someone, and do not put it in a bag to bring it to the IT desk. Ask them to come to it.
5. Ask for a loan machine in the same message. Framing it as "I cannot work until this is replaced" gets a temporary laptop moving alongside the safety response instead of after it.
6. Your files are IT's problem from here. Anything in OneDrive, SharePoint or a network drive is already off the machine — say which of your work was only ever saved locally, and let them decide how to recover it.

5. Get your data off before the laptop leaves your hands

Decide this carefully, because the answer is no whenever there is any sign of heat, smell, or noise.

1. Do not power the laptop on at all if you noticed heat, a chemical smell, hissing, or any residue in step 3. Nothing on the drive is worth restarting a failing cell for, and a service center can usually recover the drive intact.
2. If none of those signs are present and the swelling is mild, one short session on the laptop is a reasonable risk — on a hard bare surface, on battery power rather than plugged in, with you sitting in front of it the whole time.
3. Copy what matters to an external drive or upload it to cloud storage, starting with anything that exists nowhere else. Work through it in order of what is irreplaceable, not in order of what is convenient.
4. Shut down as soon as the copy finishes, and unplug the charger again. Do not use the session to finish a piece of work.

6. Start a warranty or repair claim with the manufacturer

If the laptop is yours, this is a manufacturer job from the beginning — a swollen battery is not a part you fit at the kitchen table.

1. Find the serial number or service tag, printed on a label on the underside of the laptop or under the base panel. Photograph it so you are not turning the machine over repeatedly.
2. Check the warranty on the manufacturer's own support site — Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS and Apple all have a page where the serial number returns the coverage status and end date.
3. Contact the manufacturer's support directly rather than a repair shop or a marketplace seller. Say the words "the battery is swollen" early in the conversation; most manufacturers treat that as a safety case and route it differently from a normal repair.
4. Ask whether they cover it outside warranty even if the coverage has lapsed. Some do for swollen cells specifically, and it costs one question to find out.
5. Expect a service center rather than a mail-order part. On most laptops built in the last decade the battery is glued or screwed under a panel that needs a heat gun and the right tools, and the manufacturer's own guidance is to leave a damaged cell to a technician.
6. Do not ship it anywhere without asking first. Carriers handle a damaged or swollen lithium battery differently from a healthy one, and the manufacturer will tell you whether they need to arrange a specific collection or a drop-off.

7. Dispose of the battery through a proper collection point

A swollen cell in a household bin is a fire in a collection truck, which is why disposal has its own rules.

1. Never put a laptop or its battery in normal household waste, and never in a mixed recycling bin. Compacted lithium cells are a known cause of fires in waste trucks and sorting facilities.
2. Take it to a household waste recycling center or an electrical-waste collection point. Call ahead and say it is a swollen lithium-ion battery — some sites handle damaged cells at a separate counter, and arriving unannounced with one is how you get turned away.
3. Ask the retailer if you bought the laptop recently. Many electronics retailers take back old equipment and batteries, and some are obliged to.
4. Keep the laptop on a hard surface, away from anything flammable, until it goes. A machine waiting for disposal in a cupboard full of paperwork is the same risk it was on your desk.
5. If the laptop is your employer's, none of this is yours to arrange. Hand it to IT and let their disposal process handle it — that chain of custody matters for their asset records as well as for safety.

Troubleshooting

DANGER

Stop and get people away from the laptop if it is hissing, popping, giving off smoke or a strong chemical smell, or is hot enough that you would not want to touch it. That is a cell venting rather than merely swelling. Leave the room, close the door behind you, and call your building's emergency or facilities number — or the emergency services if there is smoke. Do not carry it outside, and do not put water on it.

Attach the photo. That wording moves it out of the standard hardware queue.
The laptop is out of warranty and a repair quote looks steep	Service center labor on a glued-in cell	Ask the manufacturer whether they cover swollen cells outside warranty before paying, then price an authorized repair partner. Continuing to use the machine is not one of the options.
The swelling appeared on a spare laptop nobody uses	Cell left flat or hot in storage	The same handling applies to a machine that is switched off: hard surface, nothing flammable nearby, and disposal through a collection point. A stored laptop is not a safe laptop.
You cannot power it on to copy your files	Failing cell or protective shutdown	Do not keep retrying. A service center can normally recover the drive intact, and anything in OneDrive or a network drive is already safe. Say which files were local-only when you hand it over.
