How to Join a Zoom Meeting

Applies to: Zoom Desktop Client, Zoom Web App, Zoom Mobile App
Article Type: How-To
Last Updated: 2026-07-10

Summary

Joining a Zoom meeting is usually as simple as clicking a link, but sometimes you might be prompted for a password or forced to download an app you don't have. This guide explains the three most common ways to join a Zoom meeting and how to avoid the most common roadblocks.

Note: Check which platform the invite is actually for before you follow these steps — clients send Zoom, Teams, and Webex links that look alike at a glance. A Webex link contains webex.com, and joining one works differently: see How to Join a Webex Meeting.

Prerequisites

  • You must have a Meeting Link or a Meeting ID and Passcode
  • (Optional but recommended) The Zoom Desktop Client installed on your computer

Instructions

If someone invited you to a meeting via email or a calendar invite (like Outlook or Google Calendar), this is the fastest way to join.

  1. Open the email or calendar event.
  2. Look for the text that says Join Zoom Meeting. Below it, there will be a long blue link (e.g., https://zoom.us/j/123456789).
  3. Click the link.
  4. Your web browser will open. A pop-up box will appear asking "Open Zoom Meetings?"
  5. Click Open Zoom Meetings (or Allow).
  6. The Zoom app will launch. You may be placed in a "Waiting Room" until the host lets you in.

Method 2: Use the Meeting ID and Passcode

If you can't click the link, or you are joining from a conference room computer, you can type the meeting details in manually.

  1. Open the Zoom app on your computer.
  2. Click the large Join button on the Home screen.
  3. In the Meeting ID box, type the 9, 10, or 11-digit number provided in your invitation. (You do not need to type the dashes).
  4. Enter your name as you want it to appear on the screen.
  5. Click Join.
  6. A new window will pop up asking for the Meeting Passcode. Type the passcode exactly as it appears in your invite (it is case-sensitive).
  7. Click Join Meeting.

Method 3: Join from Your Web Browser (No Download Required)

If you are using a computer where you cannot install software (like a public computer or a heavily restricted corporate laptop), you can join directly through Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

  1. Click the meeting link in your email/calendar.
  2. When the browser opens and asks to "Open Zoom Meetings," click Cancel.
  3. Look at the webpage. Click the blue Launch Meeting button.
  4. Click Cancel again on the pop-up.
  5. Now, a new line of text will appear at the bottom of the page that says: Having issues with Zoom Client? Join from Your Browser.
  6. Click Join from Your Browser.
  7. Enter your name and click Join.

Checking Your Audio Before You Enter

When you finally connect, Zoom will ask how you want to hear everyone.

  1. Always click the blue button that says Join with Computer Audio.
  2. Pro Tip: Before you click that, click the small text below it that says Test Speaker and Microphone. Zoom will play a ringtone to ensure your speakers work, and ask you to speak and pause to ensure your microphone works.
