- No admin rights are required for any step in this article.
Instructions
1. Diagnose the Bottleneck with Task Manager
Before fixing anything, identify what is actually consuming your resources. Task Manager reveals whether the issue is CPU, memory, disk, or network.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Task Manager opens in compact mode, click More details at the bottom.
- Click the Processes tab.
- Look at the column headers: CPU, Memory, Disk, and Network. Any column showing sustained high usage (above 80%) is likely the bottleneck.
- Click the column header that shows the highest percentage to sort by it. The process at the top is the main consumer.
- Note the process name and its resource usage. Common findings:
- High CPU: An app or background process is overworking the processor.
- High Memory: Too many apps are open or a single app has a memory leak.
- High Disk (especially 100%): A process is reading or writing to disk constantly, blocking everything else.
- High Network: A large download, sync, or update is saturating your connection.
- Leave Task Manager open in the background — you will reference it in subsequent methods.
Verification: Identifying the bottleneck tells you which methods below to prioritize. If CPU is maxed, focus on Methods 2 and 5. If Disk is at 100%, focus on Methods 4 and 6. If Memory is full, focus on Methods 2 and 3.
2. Close Unnecessary Applications and Background Processes
The most immediate performance improvement comes from reducing what is running right now.
- In Task Manager, click the Processes tab.
- Review the list for applications you are not actively using. Common resource hogs include:
- Browser tabs — Each tab consumes memory. Close tabs you are not using.
- Spotify, Slack, Discord — Social and media apps running in the background.
- Adobe Acrobat or Photoshop — Heavy applications that consume large amounts of memory even when idle.
- Duplicate instances — Multiple copies of the same app sometimes open without your knowledge.
- Right-click any non-essential process and select End task.
- Do not end processes you do not recognize — they may be system processes. If unsure, leave them running.
- After closing several applications, check the CPU and Memory columns to see if usage drops.
Verification: If performance improves immediately, you were running too many applications simultaneously. Consider closing apps when you finish using them rather than leaving them open all day.
3. Disable Unnecessary Startup Apps
Apps that launch automatically at login compete for resources during boot, making your PC slow to become usable.
- In Task Manager, click the Startup apps tab (speedometer icon in the left sidebar).
- Review the list of startup applications. Each entry shows:
- Status: Enabled or Disabled.
- Startup impact: Low, Medium, or High.
- Focus on apps with High startup impact that you do not need immediately at login.
- Right-click an unnecessary startup app and select Disable. Safe candidates to disable include:
- Spotify, iTunes, or other media players.
- Messaging apps (Discord, Slack desktop) — you can open them manually when needed.
- Game launchers (Steam, Epic Games).
- Updater services for apps you rarely use.
- Do not disable:
- Your antivirus or security software.
- OneDrive (if your organization requires cloud sync).
- Audio or display drivers (e.g., Realtek, Intel Graphics).
- Restart your PC and measure how long it takes to become usable.
Verification: A PC with 3-5 startup apps becomes usable significantly faster than one with 15+. Expect faster login times after the restart.
4. Run Disk Cleanup to Free Drive Space
When your system drive has less than 10% free space, Windows slows down dramatically because it lacks room for temporary files, virtual memory, and updates.
- Press the Start key, type
Disk Cleanup, and press Enter. - Select your system drive (usually C:) and click OK.
- Click Clean up system files for a more thorough cleanup.
- Check the following boxes:
- Windows Update Cleanup — Removes old update files (often several GB).
- Temporary Internet Files — Cached browser data.
- Temporary files — App and system temp data.
- Recycle Bin — Files you have already deleted but not permanently removed.
- Delivery Optimization Files — Windows update distribution cache.
- Click OK > Delete Files.
- After cleanup, check your free space: open File Explorer, right-click your C: drive, and select Properties.
Verification: Aim for at least 20 GB of free space on your system drive (more is better). If your drive is still nearly full after cleanup, large personal files (videos, downloads) may need to be moved to OneDrive or an external drive.
5. Adjust Visual Effects for Performance
Windows 11's animations, transparency effects, and visual polish consume GPU and CPU resources. Reducing them on older or low-powered hardware makes a noticeable difference.
- Press the Start key and type
Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. - Select the result to open the Performance Options dialog.
- Select Adjust for best performance — this disables all visual effects.
- Re-check Smooth edges of screen fonts to keep text readable.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Additionally, disable transparency effects:
- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Toggle off Transparency effects.
Verification: Windows will look slightly less polished but respond faster, especially during window switching and Start menu opening. If you dislike the visual change, return to the Performance Options dialog and select Let Windows choose what's best for my computer instead.
6. Check for and Resolve 100% Disk Usage
Sustained 100% disk usage is one of the most common causes of extreme slowness on Windows 11 and can make the PC feel unresponsive even with a fast processor.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and click the Processes tab.
- Click the Disk column header to sort by disk usage.
- If disk usage is at or near 100%, identify the process at the top. Common causes:
- SysMain (Superfetch): A Windows service that preloads apps into memory. On slower drives, it can cause constant disk activity.
- Windows Search (SearchIndexer.exe): Indexing files in the background.
- Connected User Experiences and Telemetry: Windows telemetry data collection.
- OneDrive syncing: Downloading or uploading a large number of files.
- Antivirus scan: A scheduled scan running in the background.
- If OneDrive is the cause, wait for the sync to complete — the disk usage will drop once syncing finishes. Pause sync temporarily by right-clicking the OneDrive icon > Pause syncing > 2 hours if you need the PC to be responsive now.
- If Windows Search is the cause, wait for indexing to complete. Indexing is most active after a fresh Windows installation or a large file copy.
- If the problem is persistent and unexplained, restart the PC. Many 100% disk issues are caused by temporary service hangs that clear after a reboot.
Verification: After addressing the cause, disk usage in Task Manager drops to single-digit percentages during normal use. If 100% disk usage persists across restarts, the hard drive itself may be failing — ask IT to check the drive's health, and include the process sitting at the top of the Disk column and how long the reading stays at 100%.
7. Check for Thermal Throttling (Laptops)
When a laptop overheats, Windows automatically reduces processor speed to prevent hardware damage — making everything feel slow even though nothing appears wrong in Task Manager.
- Feel the bottom of the laptop. If it is uncomfortably hot, thermal throttling may be active.
- Listen for the fan. Constantly running fans at maximum speed indicate heat management issues.
- Check for physical obstructions:
- Ensure the laptop is on a hard, flat surface — not on a bed, pillow, or couch cushion that blocks ventilation.
- Check that the air vents (usually on the sides or bottom) are not blocked by papers, books, or a laptop sleeve.
- If the laptop has been running for many hours, shut it down completely (not sleep or hibernate) for 10 minutes to let it cool down.
- Consider a laptop cooling pad or stand if this is a recurring issue — elevating the laptop by even a few centimeters significantly improves airflow.
Verification: After cooling down and ensuring clear airflow, performance returns to normal. If the laptop overheats frequently under normal workloads, report it to IT — the internal fans may need cleaning or the thermal paste may need replacement.
8. Restart Your PC Properly
A proper restart clears temporary files, resets memory, and stops misbehaving background processes — many of which a simple "Shut down" does not fully clear due to Windows Fast Startup.
- Save all your work and close open applications.
- Click Start > Power > Restart.
- Use Restart, not Shut down. Windows 11's Fast Startup feature means a normal Shut down does not fully reset the system state — only Restart does.
- After the PC restarts, log in and wait 2-3 minutes for startup apps to finish loading before judging performance.
Verification: If the PC runs smoothly after a restart but gradually slows down over days, the issue is likely a memory leak in an application you use frequently. Monitor Task Manager after the restart to identify which app's memory usage grows over time.
9. Verify Windows Is Up to Date
Outdated system files and drivers can cause compatibility issues that manifest as sluggish performance.
- Open Settings (press Windows + I).
- Click Windows Update in the left sidebar.
- Click Check for updates.
- If updates are available, click Download & install.
- Restart when prompted. Some updates only take effect after a restart.
- After updating, also check for driver updates:
- On the Windows Update page, click Advanced options > Optional updates.
- If driver updates are listed, install them — especially display and storage controller drivers.
Verification: After updating and restarting, check if performance has improved. Microsoft regularly releases performance fixes through Windows Update.
10. Gather Diagnostic Information for IT Support
If none of the methods above resolve the slowness, collect the following information before contacting IT — this dramatically speeds up their investigation.
- Task Manager screenshot: Show the Processes tab sorted by the resource that is maxed out (CPU, Memory, or Disk).
- System specifications: Open Settings > System > About and note:
- Processor (CPU model and speed).
- Installed RAM.
- System type (64-bit).
- Windows version and build number.
- Disk space: Open File Explorer, right-click C: drive > Properties and note how much free space is available.
- When it started: Note if the slowness began after a specific event — a Windows update, new software installation, or a hardware change.
- What is affected: Note whether all apps are slow or only specific ones (this helps IT distinguish between a system-wide issue and an app-specific problem).
- Submit a ticket to IT with all of the above information.
Troubleshooting

If your PC suddenly became very slow after installing a Windows update, and restarting did not fix it, the update may have introduced a compatibility issue. Report this to IT with the update's KB number (found in Settings > Windows Update > Update history) so they can investigate or roll back the update.
