How to Choose a Webcam for Work Video Calls

Instructions
1. Decide Whether You Need a Webcam at All
The honest starting point is that a lot of people buy a webcam to fix a problem the camera was never causing.
- Open the built-in camera app. On Windows, click Start, type
Camera, and open the Camera app. On a Mac, open Photo Booth from Applications. - Sit as you normally would during a call, in the room and at the time of day you normally take them. Afternoon light and evening light are different problems.
- Look at three things in the preview: whether your face is bright enough to read expressions, whether the picture is grainy, and whether the background is blown out to white.
- Check what your laptop actually has. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, click your camera, and read the resolution listed. Business laptops released since around 2022 usually carry a 1080p sensor; older models and budget consumer lines are typically 720p.
- Compare that preview against the same view with a lamp in front of you. If the lamp fixes it, the camera was never the problem.
Buy a webcam when: your built-in camera is 720p and looks soft even in good light, you are on a desktop with no camera at all, you present or run training regularly, you use a laptop closed in a dock, or you need the camera at eye level rather than pointing up from a laptop screen.
Keep your money when: you are on a modern business laptop, your calls are internal, and the picture looks acceptable once the lighting is sorted.
Note: The angle is a real reason to buy, separate from image quality. A laptop camera sits below eye level and points upward, which is an unflattering angle and shows your ceiling. An external camera on top of a monitor sits at or slightly above eye height, which reads as normal eye contact. That difference is more noticeable to the people watching than a resolution step.
2. Fix the Lighting Before You Fix the Camera
This is the single highest-return change available, it costs nothing, and it makes a cheap camera look like an expensive one.
Every webcam sets its exposure from the whole frame. Put a bright window behind you and the camera exposes for the window, turning you into a silhouette. Put the same window in front of you and the camera exposes for your face.
- Face a window if you have one, or turn your desk so the window is to one side rather than behind you.
- If you sit with your back to a window, close the blind during calls. A silhouette is the most common bad-picture complaint on video calls and no camera fixes it.
- Put a light source behind your monitor pointing at your face. A desk lamp bounced off a wall works; a bare bulb pointed straight at you does not, because it produces hard shadows.
- Avoid relying on overhead ceiling lights alone. They light the top of your head and leave shadows under your eyes.
- Retest in the camera app after each change. The improvement is visible immediately.
Tip: A grainy or stuttering picture is almost always a lighting symptom rather than a hardware fault. When light is low the camera raises its sensitivity, which adds noise, and lengthens its exposure time, which drops the frame rate. A camera rated at 1080p30 in the specification often means 1080p30 in good light and something considerably worse in a dim room.
3. Choose a Resolution and Frame Rate
Resolution is the number on the box. What reaches the other end of the call is a different number entirely.
Resolution, in plain terms:
- 720p — the old baseline. Acceptable, and what many meeting platforms end up sending anyway. Not worth buying new in 2026.
- 1080p — the sensible target. Enough detail for a face on screen, small enough to encode without strain, and the resolution most external webcams are optimised around.
- 1440p and 4K — more pixels than the call will carry. The useful part of a 4K camera is not the resolution itself, it is that the extra pixels allow a digital zoom or a tighter crop without softening the image. If a camera offers 4K but sends 1080p after cropping, you gain something real. If it sends 4K to Teams, the platform discards most of it.
What meeting platforms actually transmit. Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet and Webex all adapt the outgoing stream to available bandwidth, participant count, and layout. In a normal meeting with several people in gallery view, your video is commonly encoded around 720p and can drop lower when the network tightens. Even in a one-to-one call, 1080p is typically the ceiling. Buying a 4K sensor to feed a 720p stream is spending on detail that is thrown away before anyone sees it.
Frame rate:
- 30 frames a second is the working baseline and what almost every platform sends. Movement looks natural.
- 60 frames a second is smoother if you move a lot or demonstrate physical things on camera. Most platforms will not carry it, so treat it as a nice-to-have rather than a requirement.
- Below 30 is where video starts to feel like a slideshow. Watch for cheap cameras advertising a high resolution at 15 or 20 frames a second — the resolution is real and the motion is not.
Check the specification for the frame rate at the resolution you will use. A camera listing "4K30 / 1080p60" is honest. A camera listing "4K" with the frame rate buried is usually 4K at 15fps, which looks worse than a good 1080p30 camera in every way that matters.
4. Match the Field of View to Your Room
Field of view is measured in degrees and describes how wide a slice of the room the camera sees. This is the specification people most often get wrong, and unlike lighting it cannot be corrected afterwards.
- 65 to 78 degrees — a home desk or private office. This frames your head and shoulders at normal sitting distance, keeps facial proportions natural, and crops out most of the room behind you. This is what you want for a solo desk setup.
- 78 to 90 degrees — a desk where a second person sometimes joins, or a very short desk where you sit close to the screen.
- 90 to 120 degrees — a meeting room or huddle space. Wide enough to take in several people around a table. This is the wrong choice for a desk.
Two things go wrong when a wide-angle camera sits at desk distance. First, it captures your whole room — the bed, the kitchen, the laundry — because at arm's length a 120-degree view covers an enormous area. Second, wide lenses produce barrel distortion, which at close range enlarges whatever is nearest the lens. That is your nose.
Check whether the field of view is adjustable. Many cameras offer two or three fixed settings through their companion software, which is a genuine hedge if you split time between a home desk and a shared room. An adjustable camera set to its narrowest is normally cropping the sensor rather than moving glass, so a higher-resolution sensor holds up better under that crop.
Verification: Test your current framing before you buy. Open the Camera app and sit at your normal distance. Whatever is visible around you is roughly what a 78-degree camera would show. Anything wider adds more of the room, not more of you.
5. Check Autofocus and Low-Light Performance
These two are where webcams at different prices genuinely differ, and neither appears prominently on a box.
Low-light performance is the real differentiator. A home office in the afternoon, in winter, or in the evening is a dim environment by camera standards. What separates cameras there:
- Sensor size. A larger sensor collects more light. Manufacturers list it as a fraction such as 1/2.8 inch or 1/4 inch — a bigger fraction is a bigger sensor. Cameras aimed at video calls increasingly publish this; if a listing hides it, that is informative in itself.
- Aperture. Listed as an f-number such as f/2.0 or f/2.8. A lower number lets in more light. f/2.0 in a dim room is visibly better than f/2.8.
- How the camera degrades. In low light every camera either adds noise, drops frame rate, or both. Good ones hold 30fps and get slightly grainy. Cheap ones fall to a stuttering 10 to 15fps.
- HDR and automatic light correction. Worth having if you sit with a window in frame. It brightens your face without blowing out the bright area behind you. Check that it can be switched off, because it can look artificial in even lighting.
Autofocus is more nuanced than "more is better".
- Fixed focus is set at a distance that suits a person sitting at a desk and never changes. It never hunts, never goes soft at the wrong moment, and for a static desk setup that is an advantage rather than a compromise.
- Autofocus matters when you hold documents or objects up to the camera, move around, or share a physical demonstration. The failure mode is hunting: the picture drifts in and out of focus while the camera searches, which is distracting for everyone else.
- Face-priority autofocus is the version worth paying for. It locks onto your face and ignores background movement, which is what stops the hunting.
If you sit still at a desk and never hold things up, fixed focus is the safer choice.
6. Decide on the Microphone, Privacy Shutter, and Mount
The built-in microphone. Nearly every webcam has one, and nearly every webcam microphone is a compromise. It sits an arm's length from your mouth and is usually omnidirectional, so it picks up your keyboard, the room's echo, and whatever is happening behind you at close to the same level as your voice.
- A webcam microphone works acceptably in a quiet private room with soft furnishings.
- A headset microphone sits centimetres from your mouth and rejects almost everything else. - Do not pay a premium for a webcam's microphone specification if you already own a headset. You will be using the headset.
Privacy shutters. A physical sliding cover over the lens is worth having, and it is the only privacy control that does not depend on software behaving correctly. Points to check:
- Prefer an integrated sliding shutter over a separate clip-on cap, which gets lost within a fortnight.
- Confirm the shutter does not press against the lens when closed, which scratches the coating over time.

Mounting. The physical fit is the thing most often overlooked and the thing most likely to be returned.
- Most webcams use a hinged clip designed for a monitor of typical thickness. Very thin monitors and some curved panels leave nothing for the clip to grip.
- Check for a standard tripod thread on the underside. It is the escape hatch — a small desk tripod or a monitor arm mount solves any clip that will not fit.
- Mounting a webcam on top of a laptop screen blocks the built-in camera and can obscure the ambient light sensor, and it adds weight to a lid designed without it.
- On a large monitor, particularly 32 inches and above, a camera perched on the top edge sits well above eye level and looks down at you. On a tall display, mounting the camera lower — on a small tripod beside the screen at eye height — is the better angle.
- Check the cable length before you buy if the machine sits under the desk. A 1.5 metre cable does not reach a tower on the floor.
7. Run the Buying Checklist
Work through this before you order. Anything a listing will not answer is usually an answer.
- Resolution and frame rate together. 1080p at 30fps minimum. Confirm the frame rate at the resolution you will actually use, not the camera's best-case number.
- Field of view. Around 65 to 78 degrees for a desk. 90 degrees or wider only for a shared room. Adjustable is a bonus.
- Aperture and sensor size. Look for f/2.0 or lower and a published sensor size. Absent figures usually mean unremarkable ones.
- Focus type. Fixed focus for a static desk. Face-priority autofocus if you move or hold things up.
- Automatic light correction that can be turned off.
- Physical privacy shutter, built in rather than clip-on.
- Tripod thread on the base, so the mount is never the reason it does not work.
- Connection. USB-A or USB-C to suit your machine, and a cable long enough to reach it. A plug-and-play camera that needs no vendor software to function is worth preferring on a managed work computer, where you may not be able to install that software.
- Try your phone first. Windows 11 supports using an Android phone as a connected camera through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices, and macOS supports Continuity Camera with an iPhone. Both appear in Teams and Zoom as a normal camera choice. Phone cameras have far larger sensors than webcams, so the picture is usually better than anything at the same price. The trade-offs are real — you need a stand to hold it at eye level, the phone is unavailable for anything else during the call, and a long meeting drains the battery unless it is plugged in — but it costs nothing to try, and it tells you exactly how much a camera upgrade is worth to you before you buy one.
Tip: Test any new camera inside the app you use, not only in the Camera app. In Teams, click your profile picture, select Settings, then Devices, and use the preview under Camera. Teams applies its own processing, so this is the picture your colleagues will actually see.
Troubleshooting
TIP
Before buying anything, take one call with a lamp positioned in front of you and the blind closed behind you. Roughly half of the "I need a better webcam" cases resolve at that point, and the test costs nothing.
