If your computer has a built-in fingerprint reader (or a USB fingerprint reader), you can use Windows Hello to sign in with a quick finger tap instead of typing a password or PIN.

Before You Start ​

  • Your device must have a compatible fingerprint reader (built-in or USB).
  • A Windows Hello PIN must be set up first — Windows requires this as a fallback. See How to Set Up a Windows Hello PIN.

Instructions ​

1. Set Up Fingerprint Recognition ​

Register your fingerprint through the Settings app.

  1. Open Settings (press Windows key + I).
  2. Go to Accounts > Sign-in options.
  3. Click Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
  4. Click Set up.
  5. Enter your Windows Hello PIN to verify your identity.
  6. The fingerprint enrollment screen appears. Place your finger on the fingerprint reader as instructed.
  7. Lift and place your finger repeatedly. Windows will prompt you to adjust the angle to capture the edges of your fingerprint.
  8. When enrollment reaches 100%, click Done.

Tip: Register more than one finger (e.g., index fingers from both hands) so you have a backup if one finger is wet or bandaged. Click Add another finger after completing the first enrollment.

2. Sign In with Your Fingerprint ​

Once configured, the lock screen will prompt you to use the fingerprint reader.

  1. At the Windows lock screen, place your registered finger on the fingerprint reader.
  2. Windows will unlock immediately upon a successful match.
  3. If the fingerprint is not recognized, click Sign-in options and choose your PIN or password instead.

3. Remove a Registered Fingerprint ​

Remove enrolled fingerprints at any time from Settings.

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
  2. Click Remove next to the fingerprint you want to delete.
  3. The fingerprint is removed immediately.

Fingerprint readers can struggle with very dry, wet, or dirty fingers. If recognition is inconsistent, clean the reader surface with a soft cloth and ensure your finger is dry.
