Summary

Change or reset your Microsoft 365 work password directly from your iPhone or Android phone — no computer needed. This guide covers both changing a known password and resetting a forgotten one.

Before You Start

  • A Microsoft 365 work or school account.
  • A phone with a web browser (Safari, Chrome, or any mobile browser).
  • For password reset: Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) must be enabled by your organization. Most organizations have this turned on.

Instructions

1. Change Your Password (You Know Your Current Password)

Use your phone's web browser to change your Microsoft 365 password.

  1. Open Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android) and go to myaccount.microsoft.com.
  2. Sign in with your work email and current password.
  3. Tap your profile picture or name in the top-right corner.
  4. Tap Change password (or go to Security info > Change password).
  5. Enter your current password.
  6. Enter your new password and confirm it.
  7. Tap Submit.

Your password is changed immediately across all Microsoft 365 services.

TIP

Strong password tips: Use at least 12 characters, mix uppercase and lowercase letters, include numbers and symbols, and avoid common words or patterns. See How to Create and Use Strong Passwords for more guidance.

2. Reset a Forgotten Password (Self-Service Password Reset)

Use SSPR if you've forgotten your password and can't sign in.

  1. Open your phone's browser and go to login.microsoftonline.com.
  2. Enter your work email address and tap Next.
  3. On the password screen, tap Forgot my password (or Can't access your account?).
  4. Complete the CAPTCHA verification.
  5. Choose a verification method:
    • Text message — Enter your registered phone number to receive a code via SMS.
    • Phone call — Receive an automated call to your registered number.
    • Email — Receive a code at your alternate email address.
    • Authenticator app — Approve the sign-in via the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  6. Enter the verification code you receive.
  7. Enter a new password and confirm it.
  8. Tap Finish.

Your password is reset. Use it to sign in on all your devices.

If none of those verification options looked familiar, nothing is registered on your account yet — and self-service reset only works if you set it up before you need it. Register a method now, while you still have access: How to Set Up Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) covers adding a phone number, the Microsoft Authenticator app, and a personal email address from this same phone.

WARNING

If you see "You are not enabled for self-service password reset", your organization hasn't turned on this feature. In this case, contact your IT helpdesk to reset your password. See How to Reset Your Microsoft 365 Password When You Are Locked Out.

3. Update Your Password on Your Phone's Apps

After changing your password, update it in all work apps on your phone so they don't lose connection.

  1. Open the Outlook mobile app. If prompted, enter your new password.
  2. Open the Teams mobile app. Sign out and sign back in with your new password if prompted.
  3. Open any other work apps (OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.) and enter the new password if prompted.

4. Verify the Password Change

Confirm your new password works everywhere.

  1. Sign in to Outlook on your phone with the new password.
  2. If you have access to a computer, sign in to office.com with the new password.
  3. If both work, the password change is complete.

Troubleshooting

WARNING

After changing your password, your computer may prompt you to enter the new password when you next unlock it. If your computer is domain-joined and you're working remotely, you may need to connect to VPN first so the new password syncs with your organization's network.
