Summary

A spilled drink is survivable, and what you do in the first thirty seconds decides whether it is. This article gives you the actions in strict order — cut the power, drain the liquid, dry it properly — and names the well-meant "fixes" that cause more write-offs than the spill itself.

• Nothing looks wrong, but a drink went over the keyboard.

Before You Start

• A dry towel or a stack of paper towels.
• A flat surface where the laptop can sit undisturbed for two days.
• Another computer or a phone for reaching your files and messaging IT.
• No admin rights and no tools. Do not open the case.

Instructions

1. Cut the Power Immediately

Every second the board stays powered with liquid on it is a second it can short out. Speed matters more here than in any other step.

1. Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, until the screen goes black and the fan stops. Do not use Start > Power > Shut down — a normal shutdown takes 20 to 30 seconds with the board live the whole time.
2. Unplug the charger. If the spill is large or liquid has reached the floor, pull the plug at the wall socket first, then at the laptop.
3. Disconnect everything else: the dock, USB drives, mouse, headset, and external monitor.
4. Lift the laptop clear of the puddle and set it down on a dry towel.

Note: Holding the power button is a hardware cutoff. It bypasses Windows entirely, so it works even when the screen has frozen or gone black.

2. Remove the Battery Only If It Comes Out Without Tools

A removable battery is a second live power source sitting next to the spill. Take it out when your model allows it — and only then.

1. Turn the laptop over and look along the back edge of the underside for one or two sliding latches, often marked with a padlock or an arrow.
2. Slide the latch across and lift the battery straight out. It releases in a couple of seconds with no force.
3. Stop if you see only screws, a smooth sealed base, or no latch at all. Most laptops built since about 2016 have an internal battery, and opening the case yourself voids the warranty and risks worse damage than the drink caused.

Note: Skipping this step costs you nothing — Step 1 already cut power to the board. A sealed battery is a reason to get the machine to a technician sooner, not a reason to unscrew anything.

3. Tent the Laptop Upside Down and Blot the Surface

Gravity is the most effective tool you have. Liquid that runs back out the way it came in never reaches the motherboard.

1. Open the lid as wide as it goes.
2. Turn the whole laptop over and rest it on the dry towel so the screen and the base form an upside-down V, with the keyboard facing the floor. This is the tent position.
3. Blot the wet surfaces: press a paper towel straight down, lift it, and repeat with a dry section. Never wipe or drag — wiping pushes liquid sideways into the keyboard gaps, the trackpad seam, and the ports.
4. Blot the ports, the vents, and the edges of the lid.
5. Leave the laptop in the tent position. Do not press keys to test them, and do not tilt it upright to look at the screen.

Verification: Dripping onto the towel stops within a few minutes. That is the visible sign the drain has worked — it is not a sign the inside is dry.

4. Leave It to Dry for 24 to 48 Hours

This is the hard part, and it is the step people skip.

1. Leave the laptop tented in a warm, dry room with normal airflow. A room-temperature fan set a metre away and pointed across the machine speeds this up safely.
2. Wait a full 24 hours for plain water, and 48 hours for anything else.
3. Do not press the power button to check. Not once, not for a second.
4. After the wait, refit the battery if you removed it, set the laptop the right way up, connect the charger, and press the power button.

Why the wait is not negotiable: liquid trapped under the keyboard and around the board evaporates slowly, through gaps the width of a hair. The outside is dry hours before the inside is. Powering on a damp board lets current bridge two contacts that were never meant to touch, and that short is what turns a repairable laptop into a replacement.

5. Avoid the Three Things That Cause Most of the Damage

More spilled laptops are killed by the response than by the drink.

• Rice does not work. The myth survived because laptops often dry out on their own in the same 48 hours the rice was sitting there. Rice cannot pull moisture out of a sealed case, and it leaves starch dust and broken grains in the vents, ports, and fan — which then have to be cleaned out.
• Heat makes it worse. A hairdryer, heat gun, radiator, or airing cupboard warps plastic, weakens the adhesive holding the screen and battery in place, and drives liquid further inside on the airflow. Room-temperature air only.
• Powering on while damp is what actually kills the board. This is the single most common cause of a permanent write-off after a spill, and every test press is a fresh chance to short a circuit.

Also skip: shaking the laptop, standing it on one end, sealing it in a plastic bag, and holding a vacuum cleaner against the keyboard. 6. Treat Sugary and Salty Spills as Corrosion, Not Moisture

What you spilled changes the outcome more than how much you spilled.

• Plain water conducts poorly and evaporates cleanly. A small water spill that was powered off within seconds often leaves nothing behind at all.
• Coffee, tea, soda, juice, energy drinks, wine, beer, and soup leave sugar, milk solids, and salt on the board once the water evaporates. That residue conducts electricity, pulls moisture back out of the air, and corrodes the copper tracks underneath it.
• Corrosion works slowly. A laptop that powers on perfectly after a soda spill can fail two weeks later, and by then the damage has spread across parts of the board the drink never touched.

So if the liquid was anything other than water, the laptop needs opening and cleaning by a technician — even when it comes back to life and behaves normally afterwards. Name the exact drink when you report it.

Note: Do not rinse the board with water or alcohol yourself. Professional cleaning uses isopropyl alcohol and ultrasonic equipment on a fully disassembled machine. Doing it halfway washes the residue into places it had not reached.

7. Report It to IT and Keep Working from Another Machine

Reporting a spill early costs you nothing and often saves the machine. Reporting it late, or describing it vaguely, is what turns a clean and a keyboard swap into a replacement.

1. Report it the same day. State what was spilled, roughly how much, when it happened, whether the laptop was plugged in, and whether it has been powered on since.
2. Be specific about the liquid — "black coffee, no sugar" and "full-sugar cola" lead to different cleaning work. 3. Find out what happens next. Most workplaces issue a loaner while the machine is assessed. 4. Reach your files from another computer or your phone. Sign in at office.com with your work account to open OneDrive, SharePoint, and Outlook in the browser — anything that was syncing to OneDrive is already there and needs no action from you.
5. Tell IT which files existed only on the laptop's own drive, such as anything saved to the desktop or into a folder outside OneDrive. The drive usually survives a spill that the board does not, and those files can be pulled off it during the repair. Do not press the power button to see whether the laptop still works. Powering on a board that is still damp is the most common way a survivable spill becomes a replacement, and it takes the files on the internal drive with it. Wait the full 24 to 48 hours.
