  1. Buy a standalone Modem: Look for a "DOCSIS 3.1" cable modem (e.g., from Arris or Netgear).
  2. Call your ISP: Tell them you want to use your own modem. You will read them the "MAC Address" from the sticker on the bottom of your new modem.

2. Install a Mesh Wi-Fi System

A single, powerful router in the living room cannot blast a reliable Wi-Fi signal through three walls to reach your home office. You need a "Mesh" system.

  1. Take an Ethernet cable (Cat 6 or Cat 6a).
  2. Plug one end into the back of the Mesh node sitting inside your office.
  3. Plug the other end directly into your work laptop or USB-C docking station.
  4. Turn off the Wi-Fi on your laptop to force it to use the wire. Your connection will now be flawless.

4. Separate Your Devices

If you have smart TVs, smart bulbs, and kids playing Xbox, they are competing with your work laptop for bandwidth.
