Summary

Pinning a message in a Teams chat or channel keeps important information visible at the top of the conversation so team members can find it without scrolling. This article shows how to pin, view, and unpin messages in both chats and channels.

Before You Start

  • Microsoft Teams (desktop, web, or mobile app).
  • No admin rights required.

Instructions

1. Pin a Message in a Chat or Channel

Keep an important message at the top of the conversation.

  1. Locate the message you want to pin in the conversation.
  2. Hover over the message to reveal the action toolbar (or long-press on mobile).
  3. Click the ⋯ (More options) menu.
  4. Select Pin.
  5. The message is pinned and a notification banner appears at the top of the chat or channel confirming the pin.

2. View Pinned Messages

Access all pinned messages in a conversation.

  1. At the top of the chat or channel, look for the pinned message banner or the pin icon.
  2. Click the banner to expand and view the pinned message(s).
  3. In channels, click the ℹ️ (information) icon in the top-right corner, then select Pinned to see all pinned messages.

3. Unpin a Message

Remove a message from the pinned position.

  1. Navigate to the pinned message (either in the conversation or via the pinned messages panel).
  2. Hover over the pinned message.
  3. Click the ⋯ (More options) menu.
  4. Select Unpin.
  5. The message remains in the conversation but is no longer pinned to the top.

4. Best Practices for Pinning

Use pinning strategically to keep your team informed.

  1. Pin decisions and action items — After a team discussion, pin the summary message containing the agreed next steps.
  2. Pin reference links — Pin messages containing shared documents, meeting recordings, or important links.
  3. Avoid over-pinning — Keep only 2–3 messages pinned per conversation. Too many pins reduce effectiveness.
  4. Update pins regularly — Unpin outdated messages and replace them with current information.

Does pinning a message notify the whole group?

How many messages can I pin at once?
In a 1-on-1 or group chat, you can pin multiple messages. In a Teams Channel, you can also pin multiple messages to the channel info pane.
